I take 100 mg of minocycline everyday to control my acne. Will this antibiotic and dose have ant affect my birth control? I take the generic form of Yaz28
Interactions between your selected drugs
minocycline ↔ ethinyl estradiol
Applies to: minocycline, Yaz (drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol)
Antibiotics such as minocycline may reduce the effects of ethinyl estradiol in some women. If you are using ethinyl estradiol for birth control, you may be at increased risk for pregnancy or breakthrough bleeding. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist to determine if you should use an alternative or additional form of birth control during treatment with minocycline. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Yes, antibiotics mess with hormonal birth control. Did the doc that put you on it know you're on minocycline? In this instance I don't know what to tell you because you should use condoms while on the antibiotic, but this is a long term use, so I think you're going to have to talk to the doc who ordered the bc pills.
Yes, it could. When you go to any and all doctors, you need to be sure that you list birth control pills as medications that you take. Many women forget to add these under their medication lists. Did the Dr who put you on minocycline know you were taking birth control pills (BCP)? Taking both together puts you at an increased risk for pregnancy. Many BCP failures have happened because women didnt realize that antibiotics decreased the effectiveness of their BCP. Generally women are told to use condoms as back up the whole time they are taking antibiotics and for 7-14 days after you finish them. Since you are going to be on this antibiotic long term for your acne, you need to make a decision.
You can either talk to your Dr about putting you on something different for your acne or you can talk to the Dr about a different form of birth control while you are on the antibiotics. The diaphragm is an option to use that wont be affected by antibiotics. It is not as convenient for sponteniety as the pill but it is effective to prevent pregnancies. There are also other drugs for your acne. So you just need to decide which is most important to you. If you are currently taking the minocycline, you need to be using condoms as back up-dont rely on just your pill! If you discontinue the minocycline for a different acne treatment, continue to use condoms for at least a week after you stop the antibiotic.
