drove in circles yesterday not recognizing landmarks that i've driven by for years. panicky, agitated, anxious, not sleeping well. i have severe migraines and headache specialist in houston has me on elavil and xanax to help sleep. curious if anyone did ok with the medicine but having gradual symptoms such as mine??
I took elavil and lorazepam, which is close to xanax and never had anything like you are describing. Please talk to a pharmacist (who really are the leaders in medicine knowledge) and see what they say and mention any other meds, including over the counter meds, so there will be a better picture of what is going on. I only took 25 milligrams of elavil and 1 to 2 milligrams of lorazepam. It worked for the most part, although I might have some occasional anxiety. You should also let the doctor who prescribed it know, especially if this is something new.
What is your dosage of Elavil?
Get off the Xanax. Not good for Panic Disorder. Tried it. Makes attacks works. Clonazepam is better. On a regular schedule. Ask doc to start you on a regular schedule. Do not take it only when you need it (as I suspect you are doing with Xanax) as they cause rebound panic attacks.
Also, try Topamax. Works for both panic disorder and migraines. I have been on all for 4 years and am having success. Have reduced panic attacks from 17 a month to 5 a month (unless life interferes and I have breakthrough attacks, like when my favorite pet was diagnosed with cancer three weeks ago and she died last week).
Also, you will have to learn your "triggers" and learn to avoid them. Practice Yoga, meditation, exercise, eat well, lose weight if overweight, stop smoking if you smoke, don't drink, walk regularly, go to therapy, do journaling, watch IN TREATMENT on HBO or rent the videos (wonderful for people like us, seriously).
My symptoms began gradually and then exploded until I had a breakdown (2 university students put me on a death list, along with other teachers and students, and the school didn't expel them: they followed us around everywhere, pointing gun-hand signals at us and "firing" them at their heads and making "noose around their necks" gestures -- and I'd never even had them in a class, didn't even know them). This was right after Columbine. I thought I was handling the stress well, but my body taught me otherwise relatively quickly. Still have the panic disorder, the ptsd, etc almost 15 years later. Whenever I hear about a school shooting, mall shooting etc., the attacks start uncontrollably all over again.
See your doc about the meds and start taking care of yourself.
