You definitely have built up tolerance. I am surprised your doctor keeps giving it to you, as it should only be taken for short term, usually no longer than 2 weeks. All the others such as lunesta, temazepam etc are basically the same as ambien. Have you tried ambien extended-release? Extended release helps you fall asleep as well keep you asleep.
Some people (such as myself) have something called "Ideopathic Chronic Insomnia," which is an ongoing sleep problem. Look it up. It does exist, and people who have it need ongoing help to sleep. I was also on Ambient for years. It was always a pain in the butt to keep the prescriptions coming. That in itself is stress inducing. Meaning I then needed something for the stress. It's a vicious circle.
I understand where you are coming from njfs. You need to find a new doctor who is maybe younger and more up to date on issues such as this. When I finally found a doctor who understood my issues, it was like a breath of fresh air, and ended a lot of the stress of just going to the doctor!
Bottom line is, I had to change my sleeping habits and routine completely for anything to work. When I did this I was amazed that I was finally able to sleep!
I would be happy to give you more info if you would like to contact me privately.
