... depression and anxiety have gotten a lot worse. Is this a side affect from the adderall or a possible reaction with another medication? I'm getting sick of feeling sad and angry all the time-help!
hi heidi... i've been taking adderall for about 7 months... i take the shire name brand adderall xr 20 mg, 2 of them in the morning, and 20 mg of the adderall IR in the afternoon... no doubt about it, when i first started adderall back in august of last year, i didn't think i was going to be able to stick with it... i was experiencing pretty bad anxiety, and for me, once i am anxious all of the time, depression is never far behind... i was taking the anti-depressant celexa and had been for a couple of years... it wasn't helping with the side effects i was experiencing with the adderall, or at least it didn't seem that way to me... then i thought maybe it WAS, and that if i wasn't taking the celexa, it was possible my depression and anxiety would have been that much worse, which was a pretty scary thought...
the anxiety was bad enough to paralyze me for a couple of days, to the point where it was hard to move from a seated position... scary way to feel... i told my doctor that weekend and we have since made a couple of adjustments, to where i am at now with my dosage of 40 mg XR and 20 mg IR. this is what seems to work for me. I was wondering, since you didn't mention it, what kind of adderall are u taking and what is your dosage? When i ask what kind, i mean who is manufacturer, of the generic you are taking? it makes a big difference with a lot of people with adderall for some reason... i feel a little differently on the different generic IR versions of adderall. i am currently taking the Sandoz IR, which used to be my favorite, but then it became unavailable during the shortage and i was taking the Teva brand... i do not notice as much of a difference as i used to, and the anxiety is better and i am on my 2nd week of wellbutrin and almost completely weaned off of celexa... not sure how i feel about wellbutrin yet, too early to tell.
I also, would recommend taking an anti-depressant if you aren't already. I have to come to find that others like me who have recently as adults been diagnosed with ADHD tend to have similar afflictions, for lack of a better word, and depression is very common for us... anxiety, too, of course... most people want a quick fix, like a benzo, valium, ativan, xanax or kolonopin, but they are normally abused after time and tolerance, and i think a once daily medication is a safer bet, and also a more effective way to go!
Do you find that the adderall is helping your ADHD, even though u are experiencing the anxiety and depression? if your anxiety & depression are severe enough to be keeping the adderall from being effective for you, i would definitely definitely talk to your doctor and let them know exactly how u are feeling, they absolutely should be able to help u and discuss options with you... good luck and please get back to us!
Most probably adderal isn't for you. I've took adderal for so long and it helped me in tha beginning but eventually it began to make my anxiety even.worse, my depression worse, and my mood swings intolerable. It was so serious paranoia set it and hasn't letf me since I've been off of it for 8 mns now. Agitation, paranoia, out of body experiences, restlessness, and anxiety ( bein tha main one) is all caused by amphetamines. If u already have these symptoms it opens tha door to increase tha severities of those components. If I was you I'd stop taking tha adderal ASAP. It does more damage then good.
Hopefully tht helped u and maybe answered ur question!
I believe that you may have had underlying chemical abnormalities in your brain before you started taking adderall. I took adderall along with my anti-anxiety and anti-depressants and did quite well. I was diagnosed bipolar when I was 13 and developed other symptoms at different times in my life, I believe different stressors bring up different issues. A call into the doc that prescribed the adderall may be the best thing to do. Maybe a trip to the psychiatrist (Board Certified Only) might be your best bet for figuring out just exactly what is going on in your head. My psychiatrist has saved my life more than once medication wise and talk to him/her about any other issues you might be having. Not everyone diagnosed ADHD is ADHD, sometimes that is just a convenient label to give a person. Think about it. And information is power, my friend.
Have a Wonderful, Happy, Unstressed, Spring Day,
The Sweet Hippie,
I know you asked this question on March but I hope this can may help you or anyone that ready this... I had ADHD as a child & now I have ADD as an adult, I was only dignosed 6 years ago, that's the first time I took Adderall 20mg Xr for 8 months, but I stopped till a year and a half ago because I didn't want to take any medication. When I started back on Adderall I requested that it wasn't XR, because the effects lasts longer then IR & I thought I could fall sleep better than the XR since it one pill lasted 12 hours in your body... Well, the first 3 days went by great, then I started have insomnia, so the doctor prescribed me zolpidem which kinda worked but is a 2 week medication only... Well, to make long story short, I had problems to fall/or stay sleep & I tried everything to go to sleep (from benadryl to prescription medication for insomnia), since I work 10-11 hours day/5days week being a nanny for 2 toddlers I def need my beauty rest every night... But since I take the Adderall generic version, it might helped to give me some bad side effects: difficult to speak sometimes, I couldn't read correctly to the kids, anxiety/paranoia, extreme sweating, blurred vision, irregular heart beat... So I talked to my doctor & he switched me to Dexoamphetamine (genetic). I didn't have the side effects as I was having with Adderall genetic, which was great... The problem? Not having health insurance & the cost of the brand medication (since the shortage of genetics end of last year/beginning of 2012)... The 2 pills a day I took was $500 for the month! I started to laugh when the pharmacist told me how much would be for the brand since they didn't have the genetic version that I only paid less than $70 a month! The brand costed close to my apt rent!NOTE: I really wanted to thank the drug abusers & the DEA/ Drug Administration for that! Anyways, I went back to Adderall regreting what the side effects would be, and a bad experience happened... Here's the nightmare: my doctor thought (because on top of ADD I always suffer from bad anxiety since I was a toddler) it was a good idea to prescribe me Celexa... HERE'S A VERY IMPORTANT INFO FOR THOSE WHO ARE THINKING ABOUT TAKING AN ANTIDEPRESSANT WITH ADDERALL OR GOT PRESCRIBED/TAKE CELEXA WITH ADDERALL, PLEASE READ: I took for 2 months, it was the best thing ever for me, I never felt so normal in my whole life! HERE'S THE CATCH: after I fill my prescription the 3rd time, right when I got I couldn't sleep for the first 4 days straight, was having uncontrolable body moviments, racing thoughts, slurred speech, feeling out of body experience, etc... I found out that I was about to have what is called "Seratonin Syndrome" (please search what it is, very serious medical problem), so I read various medical sites (this is the one that alarmed me: https://www.drugs.com/drug-interactions/adderall-with-celexa-190-1645-679-335.html) and basically that's what they said:
DO NOT TAKE ADDERALL WITH CELEXA... I had to go to the ER! They had to give me tranquilizers so I could go to sleep & get back to normal. Anyways, after that scare about a month ago & a couple weeks off the prescriptions I decided to only take the Adderall, but that experience was not worth at all! Is normal to experience depression if you fell guilty for feeling not in a normal state of mind taking Adderall (felling high) or any reason, and lack of sleep gives a person the same feeling as depression. PLEASE research for a good psychatrist/doctor that deals with ADHD/ADD & also depression so he can give you a proper diagnost... Trust me, I thought I was going to die with almost overdosing both medications, NOT ABUSING & taking the right amount that doctor prescribed me! Since I had that experience, my sleeping patterns have not being the same, I can't go to a deep sleep (that's when your body & mind rests) and I felt very depressed , but thank goodness for the internet so I could research WebMD's, Drugs.com's, forums, etc... If I didn't researched I wouldn't be as informed, awared and know what my symptoms, reactions, contradictions were and for making the right decision to go to the ER so I could get help.. PLEASE research antidepressants & Adderall side affects when combine, if they can interact before you take them... I really hope you are carefull on the next step you might take. I can only hope that talking about the bad experience I had can help you or anyone else that have the same struggle and read my entry... Good luck Heidi!
