Does anyone know the symptoms (non-combat related) that lead to a diagnosis of PTSD? Early symptoms and then how they progress?
Thanks a lot,
I am 42 and also suffer from PTSD, and it is a nightmare , there are three different types of symptoms
Having upsetting memories about a traumatic event, nightmares, flashbacks, having strong feelings of distress and sweating to reminders of the event.
Efforts to avoid thoughts, feelings, or engaging in conversations about the event, efforts to avoid persons or surroundings that remind you of what happened, blocking important parts of what went on,loss of interest in important, once good, things, feeling distant, difficulties with regrds to having a positive attitude
Insomnia, being more irritable or angry, difficulty focussing, constantly with your guard up like danger is everywhere around you and being edgy.
I also have terrible traumatic stress symptoms. Meso's answer was very helpful.
My trauma was not one incident but a string of four horrible events over a period of a year. I didn't have the onset of symptoms until about 6 months after.
Because I don't fit into the "normal" definition of PTSD, Ive been treated for everything under the sun. Borderline Disorder, Major Depression, Severe Social Phobia... I'm not Borderline, but I do have panic and phobic attacks with disregulated emotion.
I've tried meds for PTSD but they made me more anxious. Noone seems to take the issue seriously.
It's been two years and I'm back in therapy and trying to change my meds to help. I spent months in unable to get out of bed at all. I live in fear of everything, and had months of crying. I'm unable to let my past go. I relive it over and over. It's awful.
I know this isn't really an answer, but I wanted to share my experience with you bc I feel alone with this. If you or anyone else has advice please send my way.
Good luck to you.
