Hi and welcome to the site! First, can you please answer a few questions for me? This is not to be nosy, but just to help let me/us know a bit more of your circumstances. Are you currently seeing a licensed physician that is educated in prescribing Suboxone?
As you know, methadone is a long acting opiate. You will definitely need to be in the care of a doctor that not only is able to prescribe Suboxone, but is licensed and knowledgeable about Suboxone, or Subutex.
Please let me know so I and others may better help you.
dear William, welcome to the site. Methadone is slow to leave the brain receptor sites and it would be much better if you go to subutex as opposed to suboxone, and you still must wait 72 hours even with subutex, to avoid precipitated withdrawl, meaning the 2 meds fight and terrible was set in. Meathadone will last a few days after last dose though.
You need to be under a doctor's care to switch from methadone to suboxone. I was using 40mg of methadone but not every day for about two years. I was told to wait at least 48 hours from last dose of methadone before starting subs. You are SUPPOSE to be in withdrawal when you start suboxone. Then you only start with 2mgs of suboxone. Wait 30 to 45 min and see how you feel. If you still feel bad then you would take another 2mgs which should probably be enough until maybe the evening. You could still feel alright by the evening or you could need another 2mgs. I'm just giving you an idea of how it worked in my situation. These were 8mg sub tabs that I would break into halves and quarters. I started out with 4mg in the morning and then 4mg at night. After about a week I started taking less because I didn't need 8mgs a day anymore.
I started taking only 4mgs in the morning and nothing at night and then after about a month or so I went down to 2mgs in the morning and it lasted until the next day so I only take 2mgs a day. BUT... go to a doctor and let him work with you on it.
would any of :the educated people on this post (i read a few great resonses) agree that IF somebody had their' mind made up that they were going to do an at-home methadone-suboxone switch, the best way to determine the best time for induction would be to first take an at-home COWS assessment and make sure they score at least a 25 minimum, paying special regard to the "gooseflesh", watery eyes, the core, bothersome symptoms. It is important for one to push mental withdrawls aside and determine personal level of withdrawls soley off of physical symptoms. Watery eyes, restlessness and gooseflesh are three musts for any patient of mine before beginning sub treatment. The length of time needed before induction is dictated by both the lifespan of the substance abused and the individual complexity of each patients' opioid receptors' behavior/ metabolism/excretion levels/hours of sleep during waiting time before induction, etc...
I am in the middle of the decision of to switch from Methadone to Suboxone.
Unfortunately, I am taking Methadone a long time ago now its about 6 years.
However in the last six years thanks to the professional health I am no longer in connection of any illegal drugs and I got back my life even more I made a nice carrier that I could have ever dreamed of before and have now a fantastic girlfriend who's waiting for our first baby together!
This is so far a success story.
Now lets start about the bad parts:
-My girlfriend doesn't know I have this addiction as I do not look as a junkie and I do not have any one around me who would remind for a drug user and I don't drink and I don't do anything drug related. I was just afraid to tell her and always just tried but never got there.
-We will move together so I need to tell her and I afraid of the pain that will cause her to learn about me this addiction as I am in her eyes a leader a future father of her child and a secure clear headed husband.
-I am really afraid of to losing her. And I don't want her to look at me different because of this!
-The last problem: The bottles! I hate this at the most in the Methadone! I have to carry these big and heavy bottles like an alcoholic in my bags to hide and it is something that I can't manage anymore! Its very uncomfortable and I just want to have my tablets and thats all but no big bottles.
This is the reason number 2 to switch to Suboxone. To get the tablets and forget the bottles. Reason number 1 is to get rid of this problem easier from Suboxone as I have heard it is not that painful as it is on Methadone.
Is this true?
Please let me know my options and how to switch ???
I am prescribed by doctor and having 60mls Methadone 6 years ago.
No other substance. My doc says I need to tapper down to 30mls and then stop for 2 days for a weekend and on Monday we start with the Suboxone.
Is that not possible to do the switch from 60mls?
I just don't see why I should now get to 30mls if I think it can be done from 60mls as well? Please let me know!

Some will say 24 hrs but I would say 72 hrs. This is from personal experience:) u can be thrown into the worst withdrawal symptoms if u don't do it right, so be carefully! A friend of mine also had to do the same..3 days that is of waiting. Take detox drinks called golden seal right when ur ready to switch, well drink it on the first day of the three. Then take a colon cleanse product. These help you not to withdrawal. U will feel it at certain times but nothing like u would without them. I also suggest coffee and cranberry juice. Good luck sweety and if u need me I'm here. Truly yours... Danielle.
