Elderly With Advanced Colon Cancer Often Get Costly, Dubious Treatments: Study

Posted 10 Mar 2016 by

THURSDAY, March 10, 2016 – Expensive drugs are being given far more often to elderly patients with advanced colon cancer, but they offer almost no benefit, a new study suggests. "This research found that there is a trend for elderly late-stage colorectal cancer patients to receive newer, more expensive drugs," said lead author Cathy Bradley, associate director for population science research at the University of Colorado Cancer Center. "However, in spite of their receiving more drugs, no [significant] survival benefit was observed." In the study, published recently in the journal Medical Care, Bradley and her colleagues analyzed data on more than 16,000 Medicare patients with advanced, or metastatic, colon cancer and 4,000 patients with advanced rectal cancer. (Metastatic means the cancer has spread from the original tumor to other parts of the body.) They discovered that among ... Read more

Cheaper Alternative to Turing's Pricey Daraprim Soon Available

Posted 1 Dec 2015 by

A low-cost alternative to the infection-fighting drug Daraprim will be available to patients as soon as next week. The price of Daraprim rose 5,000 percent after it was acquired by Turing Pharmaceuticals earlier this year. The drug is used to treat a parasitic infection called toxoplasmosis. On Tuesday, Imprimis Pharmaceuticals announced it found a backer to distribute a $1-per-pill alternative to the $750-a-pill Daraprim. The backer is Express Scripts, the largest pharmacy benefits management company in the United States, CNN reported. The active ingredient in Daraprim is pyrimethamine. The new drug is a compound of pyrimethamine and leucovorin. Express Scripts said it will collaborate with medical groups to educate doctors about the new drug, CNN reported. Read more

Chemo Combo May Help Stave Off Pancreatic Cancer Death

Posted 11 May 2011 by

WEDNESDAY, May 11 – A four-drug chemotherapy regimen for deadly pancreatic cancer nearly doubled patients' survival time compared to standard chemotherapy, a new study suggests. In late-stage trials, French researchers split a group of 342 patients with advanced pancreatic adenocarcinoma, the most common form of the disease, into two groups. Half received gemcitabine, the standard treatment, while the rest received FOLFIRINOX, a four-drug combination of oxaliplatin, irinotecan, leucovorin and fluorouracil. The median survival time improved from 6.8 months for those in the gemcitabine group to 11.1 months in the FOLFIRINOX group, according to the study, which is published in the May 12 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. Those in the combination group did suffer greater side effects from treatment, however. "We explain to the patients the advantages and toxicities of both ... Read more
