Gay Men's Suicide Risk Rises as Income Falls

Posted 8 days ago by Drugs.com

FRIDAY, Oct. 13, 2017 – Gay and bisexual men with less education and income face more than five times the risk of attempting suicide than their wealthier and better-educated counterparts, a new Canadian study finds. "Less-educated men might feel a greater sense of hopelessness because they see few options to improve their lot, compared to their peers, who could address their poverty by using their education," said study lead author Olivier Ferlatte, a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of British Columbia. The study was based on a survey of more than 8,000 gay and bisexual men in Canada. The researchers focused on the answers from 145 men who said they'd tried to kill themselves within the past year. "The number of gay and bisexual men who die by suicide is comparable to those who die from HIV/AIDS. Yet we know little about the factors contributing to this health crisis and ... Read more

Postpartum Depression Likely to Recur With Future Pregnancies

Posted 26 Sep 2017 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, Sept. 26, 2017 – Women who have suffered from postpartum depression are more likely to go through it again after subsequent pregnancies, a new Danish study shows. Postpartum depression occurs 27 to 46 times more frequently during subsequent pregnancies for mothers who experienced it after their first birth, researchers report. These results show that women who have had postpartum depression in the past should prepare themselves if they get pregnant again, said lead researcher Marie-Louise Rasmussen, an epidemiologist with Statens Serum Institut in Copenhagen. Antidepressants or psychotherapy could help cushion the blow or even head off postpartum depression, Rasmussen said. "In theory, psychotherapy is preferred but not always sufficient and not always available. Often, the general practitioner has to add antidepressant medication," Rasmussen said. "Social support from the ... Read more

Health Groups Demand 'R' Rating for Movies That Show Smoking

Posted 29 Aug 2017 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, Aug. 29, 2017 – A group of America's leading health organizations is demanding that any movie that depicts smoking or tobacco use come with an "R" rating. The demand is in response to a recent report by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that found there has been no progress in reducing the number of tobacco scenes in youth-rated movies. In 2012, the U.S. Surgeon General established a cause-and-effect link between smoking in movies and the likelihood kids would pick up the deadly habit. "As physicians and advocates, we are speaking with a unified voice: Filmmakers must stop enabling the tobacco industry to target our children," Dr. Fernando Stein, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, said in a statement released Tuesday. "The evidence is clear that when children see movie characters smoking, they are more likely to smoke," Stein added. "Ninety ... Read more

FDA Looks to Reduce Nicotine in Cigarettes

Posted 28 Jul 2017 by Drugs.com

FRIDAY, July 28, 2017 – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will focus on reducing nicotine levels in cigarettes to make them less addictive, while also making other nicotine products – including patches and gum – safer, agency officials said Friday. In addition, the FDA is delaying implementation of last year's rules on cigars and e-cigarettes currently on the market until 2021 and 2022, respectively. That will allow time to ensure the regulatory standards are appropriate, FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb said at a morning media briefing. "We want to make sure those products, particularly the e-cigarettes, go through an appropriate set of regulatory dates to make sure they're safe, make sure they are meeting standards," he said. Central to the FDA's new approach to tobacco control is the belief that products such as e-cigarettes and cigars should not be used by kids. Rules are ... Read more

Do Moms Who Smoke in Pregnancy Raise Their Odds for a Troubled Teen?

Posted 11 Jul 2017 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, July 11, 2017 – Expectant mothers have been warned for years to avoid cigarettes. Now researchers report another reason to follow that advice: Teens and young adults whose mothers smoked during pregnancy may be more likely to break the law and be antisocial. The study included thousands of people in New England who were followed from birth into their 30s. The research wasn't designed to prove cause-and-effect. However, kids of women who smoked an extra pack of cigarettes a day had a 30 percent increased risk of three or more symptoms of conduct disorder as a teen, and a more than threefold increased risk of three or more symptoms of antisocial personality disorder as a young adult, the investigators found. These children also had a more than double increased risk of having a record of non-violent offenses as a teen and of committing a violent offense as a young adult, the ... Read more

Many Seniors Take Multiple Meds That Can Affect the Brain

Posted 13 Feb 2017 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Feb. 13, 2017 – There has been a sharp rise in the number of American seniors who take three or more medications that affect their brains, a new study reveals. The study looked at seniors' use of opioid painkillers, antidepressants, tranquilizers and antipsychotic drugs. A review of U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data showed that the use of these drugs in people over 65 more than doubled from 2004 to 2013. The researchers estimated that approximately 3.7 million doctor visits a year are by seniors taking three or more of these drugs. The largest increase was seen among seniors in rural areas. There, the use of these drugs more than tripled. The spike in the combined use of drugs that act on the central nervous system is cause for concern because it can lead to falls and resulting injuries, affect driving ability, and cause memory and thinking problems, the ... Obamacare Covered More People With Mental Illness, Addictions

Posted 20 Jan 2017 by Drugs.com

FRIDAY, Jan. 20, 2017 – More Americans with mental illness and substance abuse disorders got health insurance after the Affordable Care Act was introduced, a new study shows. However, these patients still face significant barriers to treatment, the Johns Hopkins researchers added. "The Affordable Care Act has been very effective in reducing the uninsured rate in this vulnerable population, where there is a real need to get people into services," said study leader Brendan Saloner. He's an assistant professor in the department of health policy and management. "We got more people covered, but we didn't make dramatic progress in closing the under-treatment gap," Saloner said in a university news release. "We need to find ways to take the next step and ensure people are seeing the providers who can help them." For the study, researchers reviewed data from nearly 30,000 adults, aged 18 to ... Demi Lovato Wants to Change the Face of Mental Illness

Posted 1 Dec 2016 by Drugs.com

WEDNESDAY, Nov. 30, 2016 – Since her 2008 breakthrough role in the Disney Channel musical "Camp Rock," singer and actress Demi Lovato has released five best-selling albums and a slew of hit singles. Numerous music awards have followed, as has a stint as a judge on the TV megahit "The X Factor." But for the 44 million American adults struggling with mental illness, it's the 24-year-old's decision to share her own mental health battles that may rank as her most meaningful achievement to date. "I've been very, very open about my story," said Lovato. "I was diagnosed when I was 18 with bipolar disorder," a condition shared by roughly 13 million Americans. "And ever since, I've been doing whatever I could to raise awareness about mental illness, and mental health, in America." Since 2015, Lovato has served as the public face of the "Be Vocal" initiative. It's a campaign that brings together ... Read more

Most Elderly Smokers Don't Use Anti-Smoking Meds After Heart Attack

Posted 14 Nov 2016 by Drugs.com

SUNDAY, Nov. 13, 2016 – Many elderly smokers who've had a heart attack fail to fill prescriptions for medications designed to help them quit smoking, a new study finds. "These findings come as no surprise for geriatricians and health care professionals who face on a daily basis the challenges of recognizing and managing the complexity of caring for older adults," said Dr. Gisele Wolf-Klein, who reviewed the new findings. She directs geriatric education at Northwell Health in Great Neck, N.Y. She noted that elderly patients face many challenges, such as "multiple medical conditions, which often include depression and forgetfulness." That can make it tough for them to initiate and stick with a quit-smoking regimen such as medications, lozenges or patches, Wolf-Klein said. The new study was led by Dr. Neha Pagidipati of Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. It was scheduled for ... Read more

Psychiatric Drugs May Reduce Ex-Prisoners' Violent Crime Rate

Posted 2 Nov 2016 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, Nov. 1, 2016 – Released prisoners may be less likely to commit violent crimes if they're prescribed certain kinds of psychiatric medications, a new study suggests. These medications can affect someone's mental state. They include antidepressants, antipsychotics, psychostimulants, drugs to treat addiction and antiepileptic drugs, the researchers said. The study authors looked at information on more than 22,000 prisoners in Sweden. They were released between July 2005 and December 2010. The researchers had a median of nearly five years of follow-up information. During that time, 18 percent of the prisoners committed violent crimes, the researchers said. Three classes of drugs were linked to much lower rates of violent crimes. Antipsychotics were tied to a 42 percent reduction in violent crimes. For psychostimulants, the reduction was 38 percent. Drugs to treat addiction were ... Read more

Many Depressed Adults Not Getting Treatment: Study

Posted 29 Aug 2016 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Aug. 29, 2016 – Most American adults who suffer from depression aren't getting treatment, a new study finds. After screening survey data on more than 46,000 people, researchers found that 8 percent had depression, but only a third were being treated for the mood disorder. The reasons why were varied. "Some adults who experience depressive symptoms do not believe they are significant and require medical attention, or that they could benefit from treatment," said lead researcher Dr. Mark Olfson. For others, stigma or shame interferes with a desire to get professional help, said Olfson, a professor of psychiatry at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York City. "In still other cases, the medical visits are oriented around more pressing and urgent medical problems, and the clinical opportunities to detect depression are missed," he said. The survey ... Depression Strikes Nearly 3 Million U.S. Teens a Year

Posted 9 Jul 2016 by Drugs.com

THURSDAY, July 7, 2016 – In just one year, almost 3 million U.S. teens suffered a major bout of depression, a new government report shows. "Adolescence is a critical time in a person's development, and battling with depression can be devastating for teens unless they receive effective treatment," said Paolo del Vecchio, director of the Center for Mental Health Services at the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). "Effective treatment is available, but parents, teachers and all concerned members of the community must work to assure that adolescents in need get help," del Vecchio said in an agency news release. These young people feel depressed and lose interest in their activities for at least two weeks. They may also have trouble sleeping, eating or concentrating, the agency explained. The overall rate of depression among young people jumped to 11 ... Read more

5 Diet Drugs: Which Ones Work?

Posted 14 Jun 2016 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, June 14, 2016 – Any of the prescription weight-loss drugs on the market can help obese people shed pounds, although some seem more effective than others, a new study finds. Currently, five drugs are approved in the United States for managing obesity. But little has been known about how they stack up against one another, said Dr. Siddharth Singh, the lead researcher on the new study. The findings – based on more than 29,000 people in total – show all five drugs can work. But people on certain drugs tended to be more successful, at least over one year. Specifically, people using Qsymia (phentermine-topiramate) or Victoza (liraglutide) had the highest odds of shedding at least 5 percent of their initial weight. Those taking Xenical (orlistat) had the lowest odds. However, there is no single drug that's "best" for everyone, stressed Singh, an assistant clinical professor at the ... Read more

Most Smokers Don't Stick With E-Cigarettes

Posted 31 May 2016 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, May 31, 2016 – Some smokers turn to e-cigarettes with the hope that the electronic nicotine delivery devices will help them give up regular cigarettes. But new research suggests that for most smokers, e-cigarettes aren't an acceptable alternative. The good news from the study is that e-cigarettes helped at least a small group of smokers quit tobacco cigarettes. Ideally, study lead author Terry Pechacek said, e-cigarettes would be both appealing and less dangerous than traditional cigarettes. "Even if they're only half as risky, there would be a huge public health benefit if we could switch 40 million smokers to them," he said. But the study suggests smokers who've tried them are saying "that's possible but we're not there yet," said Pechacek, professor and interim division director of Health Management and Policy at Georgia State University in Atlanta. For the study, the ... Read more
