Don't Skip Veggies in Winter

MONDAY, Feb. 20, 2017 – Just because it's cold outside doesn't mean you can't eat fresh, healthy foods. There are five types of foods you should try to consume during the winter months, according to health experts at the Cleveland Clinic who offer these suggestions: While it can be hard to find local produce during the winter, root vegetables such as beets, carrots and turnips can withstand the cold and are available. Roast carrots to get a dose of beta-carotene, or boil turnips for vitamins A and C. Oatmeal provides nutrients that are essential during winter. It's high in zinc (important for your immune system) and soluble fiber, which is associated with heart health. Instant oatmeal is more convenient but also more expensive. Be Wary of Imported Supplements: FDA

WEDNESDAY, March 9, 2016 – You could be putting your health at risk if you buy imported dietary supplements and nonprescription drug products, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns. Health fraud scammers often sell such products at ethnic or international stores, flea markets, swap meets or online, Cariny Nunez, a public health adviser in the FDA's Office of Minority Health, said in an agency news release. This may be because many people who shop at these places have poor English-language skills and limited access to health care services and information, she suggested. "These scammers know that ethnic groups who may not speak or read English well, or who hold certain cultural beliefs, can be easy targets," she added. Many Hospital Patients Not Asked About Supplements: Study

TUESDAY, June 23, 2015 – Most hospitalized Americans aren't asked if they take dietary supplements, such as multivitamins, a new study suggests. "If clinicians are unaware of possible drug-[dietary supplement] reactions, they may unknowingly provide a treatment plan or prescribe medications that could have an adverse reaction or interactions with the dietary supplement," said study author Dr. Paula Gardiner. She is assistant director of Boston Medical Center's program for integrative medicine and health care disparities. "Dietary supplements also affect physiological processes in the body and could have an impact on medical procedures like surgery, chemotherapy, blood work and many other treatments or procedures," she added in a medical center news release. CDC: Americans' Levels of Vitamins, Nutrients Basically OK

MONDAY, April 2 – Most Americans have good levels of vitamins A and D and folate – a B vitamin – but some groups of people need to increase their levels of vitamin D and iron, according to a federal report released Monday. The study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also found that rates of vitamin and nutrient deficiencies vary by age, gender and race/ethnicity, and can be as high as 31 percent for vitamin D deficiency among blacks. The study results were based on measurements of vitamins and nutrients in blood and urine samples collected between 1999 and 2006 from participants in the CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Vitamin A Supplements Might Cut Melanoma Risk: Study

THURSDAY, March 1 – People who take vitamin A supplements might be cutting their risk of developing the deadly skin cancer melanoma, a new study suggests. Supplements of a type of vitamin A called retinol could be a protective agent against melanoma; however, too much can result in serious side effects, researchers say. "We found a protective effect from supplemental vitamin A, more than you would get from a multivitamin," said lead researcher Dr. Maryam Asgari, a dermatologist and investigator at Kaiser Permanente Northern California, in Oakland. However, people should not be taking vitamin A in the hope it will reduce the risk of melanoma, she said. "For us to really be able to recommend that, we would need a trial," Asgari said. FDA Medwatch Alert: Soladek Vitamin Solution: Unapproved Product May Contain Dangerously High Levels of Vitamins A and D

ISSUE: Tested samples of Soladek contained levels of vitamin A and vitamin D that were many times the recommended daily allowances for these vitamins. Intake of excessively high levels of these vitamins poses a risk to human health. Symptoms of vitamin A toxicity include anemia, anorexia, alopecia, joint pain, bone weakness, bulging eyes, liver abnormalities, and birth defects. Symptoms of vitamin D toxicity include weakness, fatigue, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, changes in mental status, increased blood pressure, abnormal heart rate or rhythm, kidney damage, and coma.
