Impotence Drugs Won't Raise Melanoma Risk, Study Suggests

Posted 14 Jun 2016 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, June 14, 2016 – Three widely used erectile dysfunction drugs – Cialis, Levitra and Viagra – aren't likely to boost the risk of melanoma skin cancer, a new study reports. Why the concern in the first place? Laboratory tests suggested that lower levels of an enzyme that's inhibited by certain erectile dysfunction drugs might increase the growth of melanoma cells. Melanoma is the most deadly type of skin cancer. But studies examining melanoma risk among men who take these drugs have had conflicting results, the researchers said. The new study included more than 145,000 men who used either Viagra (sildenafil), Cialis (tadalafil) or Levitra (vardenafil). These impotence drugs inhibit an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). The investigators compared the men taking the drugs to nearly 561,000 men who didn't use them. Although the study couldn't prove no cause-and-effect ... Read more

Men, Avoid Impotence Drugs Before Surgery

Posted 21 Mar 2016 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, March 21, 2016 – Men should not take erectile dysfunction drugs such as Viagra and Cialis just before surgery, experts say. The drugs contain nitric oxide, which opens blood vessels and relaxes muscles. This can cause a patient's blood pressure to become dangerously low when combined with anesthesia and other drugs used during surgery, according to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA). The group advises men not to take Viagra or Cialis the day before surgery because the drugs take more than 24 hours to clear the body. It's also important for men to inform the person administering their anesthesia about their use of erectile dysfunction drugs. "Patients should never feel embarrassed about telling their anesthesia professional that they use these products," Juan Quintana, AANA president, said in a new release from the association. "Anesthesia professionals need ... Read more

Thousands of Dangerous Erection Cases Seen in ERs Each Year, Study Finds

Posted 2 Dec 2013 by Drugs.com

FRIDAY, Nov. 29 – A new study suggests that thousands of men seek care in U.S. emergency rooms each year for the painful condition known as priapism – an erection that lasts too long and threatens to permanently harm the penis. The researchers estimated that it costs $124 million a year on average to treat priapism at hospitals. "We're not talking about a massive problem, but it's more common than we thought," said study author Dr. Daniel Stein, chief resident with the urology department at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. It's not clear how many of an estimated 10,000 cases annually are due to a side effect of Viagra and similar impotence drugs, but urologists say they've seen very few men suffering from the infamous four-hour-plus erections that TV ads warn about. Sickle cell disease actually may be responsible for a much higher number of cases. Stein said ... Read more

FDA Takes Action to Protect Consumers from Dangerous Medicines Sold by Illegal Online Pharmacies

Posted 27 Jun 2013 by Drugs.com

June 27, 2013 – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, in partnership with international regulatory and law enforcement agencies, took action this week against more than 9,600 websites that illegally sell potentially dangerous, unapproved prescription medicines to consumers. These actions include the issuance of regulatory warnings, and seizure of offending websites and $41,104,386 worth of illegal medicines worldwide. The action occurred as part of the 6th annual International Internet Week of Action (IIWA), a global cooperative effort to combat the online sale and distribution of potentially counterfeit and illegal medical products. As part of this year’s international effort – Operation Pangea VI – the FDA’s Office of Criminal Investigations, in coordination with the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Colorado, seized and shut down 1,677 illegal pharmacy websites. ... Viagra Linked to Hearing Loss

Posted 19 May 2010 by Drugs.com

WEDNESDAY, May 19 – The erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, and possibly other similar medications, may prompt long-term hearing loss among users, a new study suggests. In the May 18 issue of the Archives of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham discuss evidence supporting an association between the onset of hearing problems and Viagra. The medication is one of the so-called class of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE-5i), which also includes Cialis and Levitra. The finding follows the 2007 decision by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to adjust labeling for such medications to more prominently display warnings about hearing loss risks. The move stemmed from reports that year regarding sudden hearing loss among users of these drugs. "It appears from these findings that the current government warning regarding hearing ... Read more

Impotence Drugs May Aid Brain Tumor Treatment

Posted 12 May 2010 by Drugs.com

WEDNESDAY, May 12 – A drug already approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction may actually help boost the effectiveness of treatments for brain tumors tied to both lung and breast cancer, research shows. The finding stems from an animal study that indicated that leading erectile dysfunction medications sildenafil (Viagra) and vardenafil (Levitra) can enable the chemotherapy drug Herceptin to more easily penetrate the so-called blood-brain barrier that must be breached in order to successfully target cancer that has spread to the brain. Although the blood-brain barrier is a naturally occurring mechanism designed to protect the brain from exposure to dangerous substances, in the case of cancer treatment it can significantly impede drug delivery, particularly of large-molecule drugs, such as Herceptin. However, erectile dysfunction drugs appear to increase the barrier's ... Read more
