Broccoli Extract Shows Promise for Type 2 Diabetes

Posted 13 days ago by Drugs.com

WEDNESDAY, June 14, 2017 – Your Mom may have been right about broccoli's goodness. A small study hints that a substance in the crunchy veggy may help some with diabetes get better control of their blood sugar. Researchers found that a concentrated extract of the substance, called sulforaphane, helped obese type 2 diabetes patients rein in their stubbornly high blood sugar levels. The caveat, however, is that the study was short-term and small – involving 97 people with diabetes followed for 12 weeks. And the extract was taken in addition to the diabetes drug metformin, not instead of it. Plus, the extract the researchers used was not like the sulforaphane supplements available at your local health food store. "The way that you produce and process the extract is important to keep the sulforaphane intact," said senior researcher Dr. Anders Rosengren, of the University of Gothenburg, in ... Read more

FDA Warns 14 Companies on Bogus Cancer 'Cures'

Posted 25 Apr 2017 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, April 25, 2017 – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday posted warning letters to 14 companies that are selling more than 65 fake cancer treatments. The bogus products include pills, capsules, powders, creams, teas, oils and treatment and diagnostic kits. They're most commonly marketed and sold without FDA approval on websites and social media platforms, the FDA announcement of its action said. The treatments are frequently advertised as "natural" and often falsely labeled as dietary supplements, the agency added. "Consumers should not use these or similar unproven products because they may be unsafe and could prevent a person from seeking an appropriate and potentially lifesaving cancer diagnosis or treatment," said Douglas Stearn. He is director of the Office of Enforcement and Import Operations in the FDA's Office of Regulatory Affairs. "We encourage people to ... Read more

Health Tip: Pregnant Women Need Omega-3 Fats

Posted 21 Apr 2017 by Drugs.com

-- Omega-3 fatty acids, such as those found in fatty fish, are an essential part of a healthy diet during pregnancy. Opt for these safer sources, recommends the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics: Choose fish that are low in mercury, such as salmon, catfish, cod and sardines. Avoid fish that are high in mercury, such as swordfish and shark. Eat foods fortified with DHA, or if your doctor approves, take a DHA supplement. Eat eggs from hens fed DHA-rich microalgae. No Evidence Fish Oil in Pregnancy Makes for Brainier Kids

Posted 21 Mar 2017 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, March 21, 2017 – Popping prenatal supplements that contain fish oil won't make your child any smarter, a new study suggests. That finding comes from a seven-year follow-up of an earlier trial comparing use of supplements containing DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) to use of a placebo during the last half of pregnancy. DHA is an essential omega-3 fatty acid found in fatty fish, like salmon, tuna and trout. It is also found in fish oil supplements. "The important result in this study is that our primary outcome – child intelligence or IQ – was not affected by fish oil," said Jacqueline Gould, the study's lead author. Gould is a postdoctoral research fellow at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute in North Adelaide. The study found no difference in kids' language, academic abilities or "executive functioning" – a set of mental skills that help people plan, pay ... Read more

Fish Oil Pills May Help After Heart Attack, Specialists Say

Posted 13 Mar 2017 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, March 13, 2017 – Doctors may want to consider prescribing fish oil pills to heart attack survivors and patients with chronic heart failure, new recommendations from the American Heart Association suggest. Fish oil may help extend the lives of those patients, the heart association said. On the other hand, the supplements cannot be recommended for preventing heart problems in the first place, said Dr. David Siscovick, lead author of the report. That's because no clinical trials have tested fish oil's effects in people who are free of heart disease. Meanwhile, a few trials have given fish oil to people at increased risk of heart disease – because of diabetes or high cholesterol, for example. All but one has come up empty. "Many people take fish oil hoping to prevent heart disease," Siscovick acknowledged. "But there's a lack of evidence that it does." Fish oil is rich in omega-3 ... Read more

Know Your Heart's Numbers

Posted 7 Feb 2017 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, Feb. 7, 2017 – More than two-thirds of Americans fret about heart disease, but few know the specific information that can help them boost their heart health, a new survey finds. "Studies have suggested the majority of coronary artery disease events can be prevented by addressing treatable risk factors," said Dr. Steve Nissen, chair of cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. "That means, a little knowledge regarding your 'numbers' could go a long way to helping keep your heart healthy and avoiding future problems," he added in a clinic news release. Treatable risk factors for heart disease include blood pressure, cholesterol, body mass index (BMI - an estimate of body fat based on height and weight), waist circumference, blood sugar and weight. The telephone survey of just over 1,000 adults, aged 18 and older, found that 68 percent were worried about heart disease. But ... Read more

Fish Oil During Pregnancy May Cut Kids' Asthma Risk

Posted 29 Dec 2016 by Drugs.com

THURSDAY, Dec. 29, 2016 – Women who take fish oil during their third trimester of pregnancy might cut their children's risk of developing asthma by as much as one-third, a new clinical trial suggests. The fish oil dose was high – with fatty acid levels that were 15 to 20 times more than the average American gets from food. But there were no significant side effects, according to lead researcher Dr. Hans Bisgaard. He's a professor of pediatrics at the University of Copenhagen, in Denmark. He stopped short of making any general recommendations for pregnant women, however. Bisgaard said his "personal interpretation" is that fish oil offers a safe way to prevent some cases of childhood asthma. But he also said there are questions left for future studies. Among them are: What is the best point in pregnancy to start fish oil, and what is the optimal dose? Experts who were not involved in ... Read more

Omega-3s a Recipe for Healthy Blood Pressure in Young Adults

Posted 14 Nov 2016 by Drugs.com

SUNDAY, Nov. 13, 2016 – Eating a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids – found in some fish and plant oils – may help young adults keep their blood pressure at a healthy level, new research suggests. In a study of more than 2,000 young, healthy adults, those with the highest levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood had the lowest blood pressure, said Dr. Mark Filipovic, a researcher at the University of Zurich and Cantonal Hospital of Baden in Switzerland. "We divided people into four groups," Filipovic said, ranging from the lowest to the highest levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood. "We found adults in the highest quarter [group] had about 4 millimeters of mercury [mm Hg] lower systolic pressure and 2 mm Hg lower diastolic pressure, compared to those with the least omega-3 fatty acids in their blood," he said. Systolic pressure is the top number of the blood pressure ... Read more

Health Tip: Kids Don't Need a Low-Fat Diet

Posted 17 Oct 2016 by Drugs.com

-- It's important for kids to eat well and to practice healthy habits, but a low-fat diet isn't necessary and may even be harmful, experts say. The American Academy of Pediatrics explains: If dietary fats are replaced by added sugars in a child's diet, it may do more harm than good. Healthy fats are essential for brain growth and physical development. Healthy fats, such as those in wild-caught fish and whole milk, are heart healthy. But not all fats are healthy. Kids (and adults) should avoid trans fats, found in many fried or processed foods. Read more

Fatty Fish May Curb Eye Risks for Diabetics, Study Finds

Posted 18 Aug 2016 by Drugs.com

THURSDAY, Aug. 18, 2016 – Two servings of fish a week may be enough to lower the heightened risk for blindness that those with diabetes face, a new Spanish study suggests. Diabetic retinopathy is a serious complication of type 2 diabetes resulting from a drop-off in blood supply to the patient's retina. According to lead researcher Aleix Sala-Vila, it is the most frequent cause of diabetes-related blindness. "We wanted to [see] whether regular consumption of seafood – fatty fish in particular – in the absence of any advice to increase seafood consumption or fish oil supplementation decreased the risk of diabetic retinopathy," explained Sala-Vila, a researcher at the Centro de Investigacion Biomedica en Red in Barcelona. Sala-Vila's team focused on patients whose overall diet was already composed of mostly low-fat or plant-based foods. That said, the team found that those who consumed ... Read more

High Doses of Fish Oil Might Help Healing After Heart Attack

Posted 2 Aug 2016 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Aug. 1, 2016 – Heart attack patients who took high doses of fish oil supplements for six months showed improved heart function and less scarring, researchers report. It is not yet precisely known how the large amounts of omega-3 fatty acids in these supplements might have helped the healing process, but the results are encouraging, said study senior author Dr. Raymond Kwong. He is director of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. In his study, 360 heart attack survivors were followed for six months. Half of them were given 4 grams of omega-3 fatty acid supplements daily for six months, while the other half were given placebo pills. A doctor might typically prescribe 1 to 2 grams of omega-3 fatty acid supplements a day if a patient has high triglyceride levels (a type of blood fat), Kwong added. Using MRIs of the heart, the researchers ... Read more

Omega-3s in Fish Tied to Better Colon Cancer Outcomes

Posted 21 Jul 2016 by Drugs.com

THURSDAY, July 21, 2016 – Colon cancer patients who take in higher amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, mainly from oily fish, may have better odds of survival, a new study finds. The study of almost 1,700 American adults with colon cancer was observational, meaning that it can't prove cause-and-effect. But it did seem to find a benefit from the healthy nutrient. One colon cancer expert who reviewed the new findings wasn't surprised. "We have long suspected the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation," said Dr. Jules Garbus, a colorectal surgeon at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, N.Y. "This study begins to show a correlation between 'healthy living' and reducing death from colorectal cancer." In the study, a team led by Dr. Andrew Chan, of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, tracked data on 1,659 people diagnosed with colon cancer. During an average follow-up of ... Read more

Healthy Fats Can Help Prevent Type 2 Diabetes: Study

Posted 19 Jul 2016 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, July 19, 2016 – Eating more healthy fats, like nuts, seeds and vegetable oils, while limiting animal fats and refined carbohydrates, can help prevent or control type 2 diabetes, new research suggests. The large study found these dietary changes can lower blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity. "The world faces an epidemic of insulin resistance and diabetes. Our findings support preventing and treating these diseases by eating more fat-rich foods like walnuts, sunflower seeds, soybeans, flaxseed, fish and other vegetable oils and spreads, in place of refined grains, starches, sugars and animal fats," said study co-leader Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian. He is dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in Boston. "This is a positive message for the public. Don't fear healthy fats," Mozaffarian said in a university news release. ... Read more

Study Cites the Fats That Could Shorten Your Life

Posted 5 Jul 2016 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, July 5, 2016 – Hold the butter, margarine and high-fat dairy: A new study supports the notion that these "saturated" fats are bad for you. The study, which followed more than 126,000 people for three decades, found that people who ate higher amounts of saturated fats and trans fats died earlier than those who stuck to healthier unsaturated fats. Unsaturated fats include plant-based, unprocessed fats such as those found in olive, canola or soybean oil, the study authors explained. "These findings support current dietary recommendations to replace saturated fat and trans fat with unsaturated fats," concluded a team of researchers led by Dr. Frank Hu of Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. One nutritionist believes the study should help clear up the confusion many consumers have about dietary fat. "There's a common misconception that eating dietary fat makes you gain body ...
