Routine School Vaccine Requirements Raise HPV Shot Rates, Too

Posted 8 Nov 2016 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, Nov. 8, 2016 – Schools that require routine vaccines as a condition of attendance have higher rates of vaccination, including higher rates of immunization for the human papillomavirus (HPV), a new study finds. The HPV vaccine protects against cervical cancer, as well as other cancers linked to the sexually transmitted virus. Children at these schools are also more likely to get recommended shots for tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough) – the so-called Tdap shot – and meningitis (the meningococcal vaccine), researchers said. One pediatrician who reviewed the new findings believes school mandates can have a big influence on whether or not a child gets immunized. "Tdap and meningococcal vaccinations rates tend to be higher due to mandatory legislation as a requirement for school entry," said Dr. Jane Swedler, chief of adolescent medicine at Winthrop-University ... Tdap Vaccine Safe for Mother, Fetus

Posted 1 Nov 2016 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, Nov. 1, 2016 – The Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) vaccine is safe for pregnant women who hope to pass their immunity on to their newborns, a new study shows. The vaccine does not appear to cause birth defects or any other major health problems for a developing fetus, according to a review of more than 324,000 live births between 2007 and 2013. "We basically showed there is no association between receiving the Tdap vaccine during pregnancy and these congenital [birth] defects, including microcephaly," said lead researcher Dr. Malini DeSilva. She is a clinical investigator for HealthPartners Institute in Minneapolis. The study is part of ongoing efforts to monitor the safety of vaccines, DeSilva said. Her center is part of the Vaccine Safety Datalink, a collaborative project led by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that includes health care ... Read more

More Parents Believe Vaccines Are Unnecessary

Posted 29 Aug 2016 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Aug. 29, 2016 – Pediatricians are encountering more parents who refuse to have their children vaccinated, mainly because they don't see the point of vaccines, a U.S. survey found. In the survey, conducted in 2013, about 87 percent of pediatricians said they had encountered vaccine refusals, an increase from the 75 percent who reported refusals during the last survey from 2006. The most common reason, provided by three out of every four parents: Vaccines are unnecessary because the diseases they prevent have been wiped out in the United States. "Because these diseases are gone, people no longer fear them, even though many of them are only a plane ride away," said Dr. Kathryn Edwards, co-author of a new American Academy of Pediatrics report based on the survey. "They don't seem to realize that these diseases do exist in other places, and could come here." The percentage of ... Read more

Put Vaccines on Kids' Back-to-School List

Posted 21 Aug 2016 by Drugs.com

FRIDAY, Aug. 19, 2016 – As parents start preparing to send their young ones back to the classroom, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says it's a good time to remember that vaccines play an important role in keeping children healthy. So, make sure your child is up-to-date on immunizations and fully protected from diseases such as measles, diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough), the agency advises. "Parents should know that vaccines protect children from many serious illnesses from infectious diseases. The risk of being harmed by vaccines is much smaller than the risk of serious illness from infectious diseases," Marion Gruber, director of the Office of Vaccines Research and Review at the FDA, said in an agency news release. Most side effects of vaccines are minor and temporary. For example, there may be soreness at the injection site or a child may develop a mild fever. ... Read more

Adults Don't Need Tetanus Shot Every Decade: Study

Posted 28 Mar 2016 by Drugs.com

FRIDAY, March 25, 2016 – Adults can get tetanus and diphtheria vaccine boosters every 30 years instead of the recommended 10 years, a new study suggests. "We have always been told to get a tetanus shot every 10 years, but actually, there is very little data to prove or disprove that timeline," said researcher Mark Slifka. He is a professor at the Oregon National Primate Research Center at Oregon Health & Science University. Revising that vaccination schedule could also save the U.S. health care system hundreds of millions of dollars a year, the researchers added in a university news release. For the study, the investigators examined immunity levels in over 500 adults. The researchers found that after completing the standard five-dose childhood vaccine series, adults remain protected against tetanus and diphtheria for at least 30 years without the need for further booster shots. One in Five Pediatricians Drops Families Who Refuse Vaccines: Survey

Posted 2 Nov 2015 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Nov. 2, 2015 – One of every five U.S. pediatricians regularly drops families who refuse to have their children vaccinated, a new survey shows. Doctors in the South and Northeast were more likely to take this hardline stance, said study lead author Dr. Sean O'Leary, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Children's Hospital Colorado in Denver. But O'Leary said he's heard anecdotally that pediatricians across the nation have come under pressure to refuse to take on unvaccinated children, following the Disneyland measles outbreak that occurred earlier this year. "I'm hearing the practice has become more common, particularly in California, following the outbreak," O'Leary said. "Parents say, 'I don't want to take my child to a clinic with non-vaccinators and expose them to risk,' so there is parental pressure on some pediatricians." An ongoing medical debate continues to ... Read more

Study Says Tdap Vaccine Safe During Pregnancy

Posted 20 Oct 2015 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, Oct. 20, 2015 – Even if a woman gets a tetanus-containing shot before she conceives, it is still safe to give her the tetanus-containing Tdap vaccine while she is pregnant, new research indicates. As it stands, federal guidelines state that the Tdap vaccine, which also guards against diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough), is recommended for every woman during every pregnancy. However, there has been a lack of research on the safety of giving the vaccine during pregnancy, the researchers noted. And some women have often balked at the recommendation. "Pregnant patients are often reluctant to take medications, especially vaccinations," explained Dr. Jennifer Wu, an obstetrician/gynecologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, who was not involved with the study. "Recent recommendations for Tdap vaccines are often met with resistance from patients. Some of the foremost ... Read more

Childhood Vaccines Debate Rekindled at GOP Presidential Debate

Posted 18 Sep 2015 by Drugs.com

THURSDAY, Sept. 17, 2015 – Some parents' long-simmering concerns over the safety of childhood vaccines received unexpected – and, in some quarters, unwelcome – notice during the second Republican presidential candidates' debate. While the link between vaccines and autism has long been discredited, an exchange toward the debate's end addressed a more recent parental concern – whether children are receiving too many vaccines too soon. And the potential fallout from that exchange has infectious-disease experts worried. Candidates Ben Carson and Rand Paul – both doctors – both argued Wednesday night that children probably are receiving too many vaccinations in too short a time, and that parents ought to have the right to deviate from the recommended schedule. The candidates said vaccines are safe and important, and dismissed fears that some vaccines might cause autism, but argued for ... Read more

Start of School Year Calls for Vaccine Check

Posted 21 Aug 2015 by Drugs.com

FRIDAY, Aug. 21, 2015 – With the start of a new school year, many parents are searching for vaccination records and hoping they're current, but what does "up-to-date" look like these days? That depends on whether it's what the school requires or what pediatric experts recommend. "Not all vaccines that we recommend on the schedule are required by schools," said Wendy Sue Swanson, a pediatrician at Seattle Children's Hospital. "But schools help us keep up-to-date and have an annual assessment" of vaccine status. Swanson explained that during childhood, three key school transitions coincide with vaccine schedules. The first, she said, is when a child enters kindergarten. Then, "typically, at sixth grade, we refresh again. And there are updates that we provide kids at the end of high school as get they ready to go to college," she added. Each of these turning points usually means exposure ... Read more

Doctors Worry About Return of Vaccine-Preventable Ills in Kids

Posted 12 Jun 2015 by Drugs.com

FRIDAY, June 12, 2015 – Although most U.S. children are getting their routine vaccinations, recent trends have experts concerned that Americans will lose some of the "herd immunity" that has long protected many from serious infections. The vast majority of U.S. kids are up-to-date with routine jabs against once-common infections like polio, measles, mumps, whooping cough and chickenpox. But that "coverage" varies from state to state, according to the latest figures from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2013, there were 17 states where less than 90 percent of 1.5- to 3-year-olds had gotten their first dose of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, the CDC found. And nationally, recent years have seen a small dip in the percentage of young children who are up-to-date with some other vaccines, according to Dr. Mark Sawyer, an infectious disease specialist at Rady ... Infectious-Disease Expert Debunks Common Vaccine Myths

Posted 12 May 2015 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, May 12, 2015 – A small minority of people still distrust the safety of routine childhood vaccinations, but one expert says the myths that swirl around vaccines are easily dismissed. "Both parents and doctors have the same goal, to keep a child healthy, and the best way to keep a child safe is through vaccination," said Dr. Nadia Qureshi, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Loyola University Health System in Chicago. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, vaccines have saved more than 732,000 lives in the United States over the past two decades. But misconceptions about these simple but crucial health care interventions persist. One major myth is that the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine causes autism, said Qureshi, who is also an assistant professor of pediatrics at Loyola University. "This myth began in 1998 when an English surgeon ... Read more

Sanofi Pasteur Announces FDA Approval of Quadracel DTaP-IPV Vaccine for Children 4 through 6 Years of Age

Posted 25 Mar 2015 by Drugs.com

SWIFTWATER, Pa., March 25, 2015 /PRNewswire/ – Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of Sanofi , announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved use of Quadracel (Diphtheria and Tetanus Toxoids and Acellular Pertussis Absorbed and Inactivated Poliovirus; DTaP-IPV) vaccine for active immunization against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and poliomyelitis in children 4 through 6 years of age. "The FDA approval of Quadracel vaccine provides health care providers with a new combination vaccine, potentially reducing the number of vaccine injections children aged 4 through 6 would need," said David P. Greenberg, M.D., Vice President, U.S. Scientific and Medical Affairs, Sanofi Pasteur. "Our goal is to help remove barriers to timely immunization and we think this combination vaccine could help ensure children are getting vaccinated in line with current ... Read more

Tetanus Shot Helped Boost Brain Cancer Survival, Small Study Finds

Posted 12 Mar 2015 by Drugs.com

THURSDAY, March 12, 2015 – Adding a simple tetanus shot to another vaccine treatment for a highly lethal form of brain cancer dramatically extended some patients' survival in a small new study. Researchers from Duke Cancer Institute found that three of six patients with glioblastoma – a brain tumor with a very poor prognosis – lived years longer than expected after receiving a tetanus shot to enhance an immunotherapy targeting a virus in the tumor. One patient is still alive nearly nine years after the treatment. Prior research had found that glioblastoma tumors harbor a strain of cytomegalovirus not present in surrounding brain tissue. This creates a natural target for immunotherapy – therapy that harnesses the power of a patient's own immune system to help destroy cancer cells, researchers say. "Because the [average] survival is 12 to 15 months in patients who receive a diagnosis ... Read more

Vaccine Opponents Often Cluster in Communities

Posted 19 Jan 2015 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Jan. 19, 2015 – Parents who refuse to have their children vaccinated appear to be clustered in certain areas, a new study suggests. Among more than 150,000 children in 13 counties in Northern California, the researchers found five clusters where kids had missed one or more vaccinations by the time they were 3 years old. "It's known from other studies that areas where there are clusters of vaccine refusal are at higher risk of epidemics, such as whooping cough epidemics," said lead investigator Dr. Tracy Lieu, a pediatrician and director of the division of research at Kaiser Permanente Northern California, in Oakland. "Clusters may deserve special outreach efforts to make sure parents have all the information they need to make informed decisions about vaccination," she said. Specifically, the researchers found the rate of missed vaccinations within these clusters ranged from 18 ... Read more

Parents Want Children in Day Care to Be Vaccinated: Poll

Posted 18 Nov 2014 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, Nov. 18, 2014 – Three-quarters of American parents would consider removing their children from day care if other kids did not have all the recommended vaccinations, and many say that under-vaccinated children shouldn't be allowed to attend day care. Those are among the findings from a national survey of parents of children up to 5 years old. The parents were asked how they would respond if 25 percent of children in their day care center were not up to date on vaccines, which mirrors the actual situation in the United States. Seventy-four percent of parents said they would think about removing their children from the day care center. And 52 percent "strongly agreed" and 22 percent "agreed" that day care providers should review children's immunization status every year to ensure they have received all the recommended vaccinations. Forty-one percent of parents said ... Read more
