Can HIV Drugs Boost Syphilis Risk?

Posted 8 hours ago by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Jan. 16, 2017 – Gay and bisexual men taking antiretroviral drugs to treat HIV infection may be at increased risk for syphilis, new research contends. Based on a review of available evidence, the investigators concluded that the drugs may boost susceptibility to the bacterium that causes syphilis, although the study did not prove cause-and-effect. The finding might explain why new and repeat cases of syphilis in gay and bisexual men have risen sharply compared to other sexually transmitted infections over the past decade, the researchers wrote. The study team was led by Dr. Michael Rekart, from the University of British Columbia's School of Population and Public Health in Vancouver. The findings were published in the Jan. 16 issue of the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections. The authors of an editorial that accompanied the study said the theory is "intriguing" and "warrants ... Read more

Pubic Grooming Tied to Higher STD Rates

Posted 6 Dec 2016 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Dec. 5, 2016 – Brazilian bikini waxing and similar forms of personal grooming may be all the rage, but they come with a heightened risk of acquiring a sexually transmitted disease, new research suggests. The study found that frequent groomers of pubic hair are three to four times more likely to contract a sexually transmitted infection, such as herpes, human papillomavirus (HPV) or syphilis. "Grooming is linked to a heightened self-reported sexually transmitted disease risk, and for those who groom frequently or remove all of their hair often, the association is even higher," said lead researcher Dr. Charles Osterberg. He's an assistant professor of urology and surgery at the University of Texas Dell Medical School in Austin. Still, the study didn't prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship between pubic grooming and sexually transmitted infections, it was only designed to ... Read more

Sexually Transmitted Diseases Hit All-Time High: CDC

Posted 19 Oct 2016 by Drugs.com

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 19, 2016 – Sexually transmitted disease (STD) cases reached a record high in the United States in 2015, federal officials reported Wednesday. There were more than 1.5 million chlamydia cases, nearly 400,000 cases of gonorrhea, and nearly 24,000 cases of primary and secondary (P&S) syphilis, the most infectious stages of the disease, the report detailed. The largest increase in reported STD cases between 2014 to 2015 occurred in P&S syphilis (19 percent), followed by gonorrhea (13 percent) and chlamydia (6 percent), the report revealed. Findings were published in the annual Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance Report released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These results point to the need for increased STD prevention efforts, especially among those at greatest risk, officials said. "We have reached a decisive moment for the nation," Dr. ... Read more

Task Force: Screen All Teens, Adults at Risk for Syphilis

Posted 15 Dec 2015 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Dec. 14, 2015 – All adults and teens at increased risk for syphilis should be screened for the sexually transmitted disease, a U.S. Preventive Services Task Force draft recommendation says. The recommendation complements a 2009 task force recommendation that all pregnant women be screened for syphilis. Rates of the disease in the United States are on the rise, with nearly 20,000 cases of the earliest stages of syphilis reported in 2014, the highest since 1994. "Given the rising rates of syphilis infection, clinicians should focus on screening people at increased risk," task force member Dr. Francisco Garcia said in a task force news release. Garcia is director and chief medical officer of the Pima County Department of Health in Tucson, Ariz., and a professor of public health at the University of Arizona. Those at the highest risk for syphilis are gay and bisexual men and people ... Read more

CDC: Too Few Schools Teach Prevention of HIV, STDs, Pregnancy

Posted 9 Dec 2015 by Drugs.com

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 9, 2015 – Too few U.S. schools teach students how to protect themselves from HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, how to prevent pregnancy, and other important sexual health information, federal officials reported Wednesday. In most of the country, fewer than half of high schools and only one-fifth of middle schools teach all 16 sexual health education topics recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 44 states, the proportion of high schools that teach all 16 topics in grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 ranges from 21 percent in Arizona to 90 percent in New Jersey. Only three states – New Hampshire, New Jersey and New York – have more than 75 percent of high schools teaching all of the topics. The proportion of middle schools that teach all 16 topics in grades 6, 7 or 8 ranges from 4 percent in Arizona to 46 percent in North Carolina. No state ... Read more

Columbus Did Not Bring Syphilis Back to Europe, Research Shows

Posted 23 Nov 2015 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Nov. 23, 2015 – It's a common notion that after discovering America, Columbus and his crew then brought back the scourge of syphilis to Europe. But there's now conclusive evidence that the theory simply isn't true, and syphilis was already present in the Old World long before Columbus set sail in 1492. Researchers at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria, say they have discovered evidence of congenital syphilis – the type of illness passed from a mother to her fetus – in skeletons buried as early as 1320 in the cathedral square of St. Polten, Austria. The investigators, from the university's Center for Anatomy and Cell Biology, cut away extremely thin slices of bones and teeth of the skeletons to examine under the microscope. The teeth provided especially good evidence supporting syphilis infection, said a team led by Karl Grossschmidt and Fabian Kanz, of the university's ... Read more

Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia Rates Rising for First Time in Years: CDC

Posted 17 Nov 2015 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, Nov. 17, 2015 – The number of cases of three key sexually transmitted diseases increased last year for the first time since 2006, concerned U.S. health officials reported Tuesday. In 2014, 1.4 million cases of chlamydia were reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – a 2.8 percent increase since 2013. This is the highest number of cases of any STD ever reported to the CDC, the government researchers said in the annual report. Substantial increases were also reported in rates of syphilis (15 percent) and gonorrhea (5 percent). And the syphilis rates were highest among gay and bisexual men, according to the CDC's Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance, 2014 report. "In the previous years, we have had some declines in some diseases and increases in others. But, we are concerned about the alarming increases we are seeing in chlamydia, gonorrhea and ... Read more

New STD Report Finds Some Progress, High Costs for U.S.

Posted 23 Nov 2010 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Nov. 22 – The approximately 19 million new sexually transmitted disease (STD) infections that occur each year in the United States cost the health care system about $16.4 billion annually, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in its annual STD report released Monday. The data for 2009 shows a continued high burden of STDs but there are some signs of progress, according to the report, which focuses on chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. The national rate of reported gonorrhea cases stands at 99 cases per 100,000 people, its lowest level since record keeping started in 1941, and cases are declining among all racial/ethnic groups (down 17 percent since 2006). Since 2006, chlamydia infections have increased 19 percent to about 409 per 100,000 people. However, the report suggests that this indicates more people than ever are being screened for chlamydia, which is ... Read more
