Staph Aureus Rates Of Resistance To Certain Antibiotics Show A Decrease Over Time

TUESDAY, June 13, 2017 – Staphylococcus aureus infections among U.S. hospital patients have been less resistant to key antibiotics in recent years, a new study finds. Between 2009 and 2015, researchers tested antibiotic resistance in more than 19,000 S. aureus samples from 42 medical centers nationwide. "Results showed that S. aureus' rates of resistance to certain antibiotics decreased over time, which isn't often seen," study co-author Dr. Helio Sader said in an American Society for Microbiology news release. Sader is senior director of microbiology and surveillance at JMI Laboratories in North Liberty, Iowa. Rates of S. aureus resistance to the antibiotic oxacillin (Bactocill) fell from 47.2 percent in 2009 to 43.6 percent in 2015 to 42.2 percent in 2016. Antibiotic Overuse Behind 'Superbug' Outbreak in U.K. Hospitals

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 25, 2017 – Overuse of antibiotics triggered a severe diarrhea outbreak in British hospitals that began in 2006, a new study reports. Researchers analyzed hospital data related to the outbreak of Clostridium difficile, a "superbug" gut infection. The investigators concluded that reducing the use of fluoroquinolones – antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin (Cipro) and levofloxacin (Levaquin) – curbed the outbreak. "These findings are of international importance because other regions, such as North America, where fluoroquinolone prescribing remains unrestricted, still suffer from epidemic numbers of C. difficile infections," said study co-author Derrick Crook. FDA Bolsters Warnings About Class of Antibiotics

TUESDAY, July 26, 2016 – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday that it's strengthening label warnings on a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones because the drugs can lead to disabling side effects, including long-term nerve damage and ruptured tendons. The agency also cautioned that these bacteria-fighting drugs – including levofloxacin (Levaquin) and ciprofloxacin (Cipro) – shouldn't be prescribed for sinusitis, chronic bronchitis or simple urinary tract infections unless no other treatments options exist. "Fluoroquinolones have risks and benefits that should be considered very carefully," Dr. Edward Cox said in an FDA news release. Eye Antibiotics Can Cause Drug-Resistant Bacteria: Study

MONDAY, Sept. 12 – Repeated use of antibiotics among patients who receive eye injections for such ophthalmic conditions as age-related macular degeneration can lead to the emergence of drug-resistant germs, according to a new study. More than eight million people in the United States are affected by age-related macular degeneration, and its treatment involves monthly injections that are typically followed by antibiotics to prevent such complications as inflammation of the eye. Researchers from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville found, however, that long-term use of antibiotics after eye injection therapy may promote the growth of hard-to-treat germs.
