Staph Aureus Rates Of Resistance To Certain Antibiotics Show A Decrease Over Time

Posted 14 Jun 2017 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, June 13, 2017 – Staphylococcus aureus infections among U.S. hospital patients have been less resistant to key antibiotics in recent years, a new study finds. Between 2009 and 2015, researchers tested antibiotic resistance in more than 19,000 S. aureus samples from 42 medical centers nationwide. "Results showed that S. aureus' rates of resistance to certain antibiotics decreased over time, which isn't often seen," study co-author Dr. Helio Sader said in an American Society for Microbiology news release. Sader is senior director of microbiology and surveillance at JMI Laboratories in North Liberty, Iowa. Rates of S. aureus resistance to the antibiotic oxacillin (Bactocill) fell from 47.2 percent in 2009 to 43.6 percent in 2015 to 42.2 percent in 2016. S. aureus resistance to other antibiotics, such as levofloxacin (Levaquin), clindamycin (Cleocin) and erythromycin, also ... Read more

Antibiotic Resistance Common in Kids' Urinary Tract Infections

Posted 16 Mar 2016 by Drugs.com

WEDNESDAY, March 16, 2016 – Many kids who develop urinary tract infections tied to the E. coli bacteria are now failing to respond to antibiotic treatment, a new review warns. The culprit, according to the British researchers: Drug resistance, following years of over-prescribing and misusing antibiotics. "Antimicrobial resistance is an internationally recognized threat to health," noted study author Ashley Bryce, a doctoral fellow at the Center for Academic Primary Care at the University of Bristol in the U.K. And that threat is of particular concern among young patients, the authors said, given that E. coli-driven urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common forms of pediatric bacterial infections. Young children are more vulnerable to complications including kidney scarring and kidney failure, so they require prompt, appropriate treatment, added Bryce and co-author ... Read more

Eye Antibiotics Can Cause Drug-Resistant Bacteria: Study

Posted 12 Sep 2011 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Sept. 12 – Repeated use of antibiotics among patients who receive eye injections for such ophthalmic conditions as age-related macular degeneration can lead to the emergence of drug-resistant germs, according to a new study. More than eight million people in the United States are affected by age-related macular degeneration, and its treatment involves monthly injections that are typically followed by antibiotics to prevent such complications as inflammation of the eye. Researchers from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville found, however, that long-term use of antibiotics after eye injection therapy may promote the growth of hard-to-treat germs. "Repeated exposure of ocular flora [microbes living on or inside the body] ... may select for resistant bacterial strains and cultivate 'superbugs' with multiple-drug resistance ..." the study's authors wrote a news ...
