WEDNESDAY, March 7 – The drug misoprostol reduced major complications from early surgical abortion by nearly one-third, according to a new study. Doctors often use misoprostol for cervical preparation prior to surgical abortion (vacuum aspiration). Until now, however, there were no studies large enough to determine whether the drug reduces the risk of serious complications, either immediate or delayed, according to background information in the study published in the March 8 online edition of The Lancet. For the study, researchers from the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva compared rates of complications among nearly 5,000 women in nine countries who underwent surgical abortion before 12 weeks of gestation.
