Drug Duo Cures a Tick-Borne Disease -- in Mice

Posted 6 Jun 2016 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, June 6, 2016 – Babesiosis is a sometimes serious illness transmitted to humans by ticks. Now, researchers say a two-drug combo seems to have cured the illness in mice. Babesiosis – transmitted by the same ticks that transmit the bacteria behind Lyme disease – is caused by the B. microti parasite, which can develop resistance to current treatments. "This is the first radical cure against this parasite," said lead researcher Choukri Ben Mamoun. He's an associate professor of infectious diseases at Yale University, in New Haven, Conn. People infected with the babesiosis parasite sometimes have no symptoms. However, in other cases they can develop symptoms that range from mild and flu-like, to severe and life-threatening. Babesiosis is becoming more common in the United States, the researchers noted, and is more widespread in the Northeast and northern Midwest. The Yale team said ... Read more

Drug Makers, Governments Sign Deal to Fight Drug-Resistant Infections

Posted 21 Jan 2016 by Drugs.com

A groundbreaking agreement between the drug industry and governments to work together to fight drug-resistant "superbugs" is expected to be announced Thursday. Under the deal, 74 drug makers, 11 diagnostic test makers, and nine industry groups pledge to work with each other and 16 countries to prevent and improve treatment of drug-resistant infections, the Associated Press reported. These infections are a serious threat to millions of people worldwide and a number of factors contribute to the problem, including overuse of antibiotics, declining drug industry research, and few new medicines to combat bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi. The new deal – scheduled to be announced at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland – is the first to outline how the drug industry and governments should team up to prevent more drugs from becoming ineffective, to spur development of new ... Ebola Linked to Rise in Malaria Deaths in Guinea

Posted 24 Jun 2015 by Drugs.com

WEDNESDAY, June 24, 2015 – The Ebola epidemic in West Africa appears to have led to an increase in malaria deaths last year, a new study finds. Research in Guinea, one of the countries hardest hit by the Ebola epidemic, indicates an extra 74,000 cases of malaria went untreated in 2014, compared to previous years. As a result, deaths associated with malaria (a mosquito-borne disease) also rose and will likely exceed Ebola deaths in Guinea, researchers reported June 23 in The Lancet Infectious Diseases. "One problem is that the early symptoms of malaria [fever, headache and body aches] mimic those of Ebola virus disease," said study author Dr. Mateusz Plucinski, from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Malaria is one of the main causes of fever and health facilities visits in Guinea, but our data suggest that since the start of the Ebola epidemic, people with fevers ... Read more
