Don't Skip Veggies in Winter

Posted 21 Feb 2017 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Feb. 20, 2017 – Just because it's cold outside doesn't mean you can't eat fresh, healthy foods. There are five types of foods you should try to consume during the winter months, according to health experts at the Cleveland Clinic who offer these suggestions: While it can be hard to find local produce during the winter, root vegetables such as beets, carrots and turnips can withstand the cold and are available. Roast carrots to get a dose of beta-carotene, or boil turnips for vitamins A and C. Oatmeal provides nutrients that are essential during winter. It's high in zinc (important for your immune system) and soluble fiber, which is associated with heart health. Instant oatmeal is more convenient but also more expensive. If you're on a budget, choose old-fashioned oats. Soup is another good food choice in winter, but hold the cream, salt and beef. Try soup recipes that call for ... Read more

8 Ways to Help Kids Dodge Germs

Posted 9 Feb 2017 by Drugs.com

WEDNESDAY, Feb. 8, 2017 – There are a number of ways parents can help give a boost to their child's immune system, a family doctor suggests. "The immune system helps us fight infections," said Dr. Palak Shroff, a family medicine specialist at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. "Immunity develops over time, so the more someone gets exposed, the more the immune system develops," Shroff explained in a center news release. "Kids' whole environment is new, but over time, their immunity will develop and get better," she added. Shroff suggested eight keys to helping children minimize their risk of catching every cold and virus that comes their way: Breast-feeding is the first step. It is an important way to help your child develop a strong immune system. "During breast-feeding, the mother's immunity transfers to the child," Shroff said. Vaccination is another crucial factor. ... Read more

Genital Herpes Vaccine Shows Promise in Animal Trials

Posted 20 Jan 2017 by Drugs.com

THURSDAY, Jan. 19, 2017 – A new vaccine for genital herpes could be nearing human clinical trials, researchers say. The vaccine has proven effective in animals against herpes simplex virus 2, the sexually transmitted virus that causes genital herpes, according to a new report. The new "trivalent" vaccine targets three different parts of the virus, shutting down its ability to enter cells and to evade detection by the immune system, said senior researcher Dr. Harvey Friedman. He's a professor with the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine's Institute for Immunology. In lab studies, the vaccine proved 98 percent effective in protecting guinea pigs against genital herpes infection, Friedman and his colleagues reported. The vaccine also promoted an immune response in monkeys, increasing the levels of antibodies targeting the virus, the study authors said. The vaccine's developers ... Read more

Medical Experts Alarmed at Trump's Reported Support of Vaccine Skeptic

Posted 11 Jan 2017 by Drugs.com

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 11, 2017 – The U.S. medical community is responding with reactions ranging from apprehension to dismay at reports that President-elect Donald Trump reportedly asked a renowned vaccine skeptic to head a new commission on vaccine safety. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has written articles and books claiming a link between childhood vaccines and autism, said Tuesday that Trump had offered him the post during a meeting earlier that day. A Trump spokeswoman threw some doubt on Kennedy's assertion, however, stating hours later that while the president-elect is interested in a commission on autism, no final decision has been made. Nonetheless, a host of medical societies, autism advocacy groups and individual physicians immediately denounced the potential development, which they said would shake the public's faith in a practice that regularly protects millions of people from ... Health Tip: Getting Your Child Vaccinated

Posted 22 Dec 2016 by Drugs.com

-- Vaccinations are a necessary part of keeping your child healthy, but the pain and fear may be difficult to endure. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests: Talk to the pediatrician about ways to manage your child's pain. Distract a young child during the shot by singing a song, blowing bubbles or playing a game. Act the doctor about using a numbing spray or cream. Breast-feed or offer a pacifier to babies during vaccination. Stay calm and reassure your child that everything is OK. Read more

Certain Beliefs Motivate Health Care Workers to Get Flu Shots

Posted 8 Mar 2012 by Drugs.com

THURSDAY, March 8 – The belief that a seasonal flu shot is effective is far more likely to convince health care workers to get vaccinated than reminding them it will help safeguard patients, a new study suggests. In many developed countries, it's difficult to persuade frontline health care workers to get seasonal flu vaccinations in order to protect patients from the flu, the researchers noted. To examine the issue more closely, the investigators reviewed 13 studies that included a total of nearly 85,000 health care workers in North America, Europe and Australia. Overall, doctors were more willing than nurses to get a flu vaccination, according to the study published March 7 in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine. The researchers identified a number of factors that had the strongest influence on health care workers' decision to get vaccinated. All of these factors were ... Read more

Flu Prevention Critical for Those With Neurologic Conditions, CDC Says

Posted 5 Jan 2012 by Drugs.com

THURSDAY, Jan. 5 – Children and young adults with neurological and neurodevelopmental conditions are at high risk for complications from the flu and should receive flu vaccinations, say health officials who investigated a flu outbreak in Ohio in February 2011. Of the 130 people living at a residential facility for children and young adults with neurological and neurodevelopmental conditions, 76 (58 percent) developed respiratory illness. Thirteen became severely ill and seven died. All 13 residents who became severely ill had multiple neurological and neurodevelopmental conditions, which may have hindered early diagnosis and treatment of the flu and contributed to the severity of their illness, said the research team from the Ohio Department of Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The investigators said doctors need to watch for signs of flu among ... Read more

Flu Shots for Pregnant Women Also Protect Newborns, Study Finds

Posted 30 Jun 2011 by Drugs.com

WEDNESDAY, June 29 – Giving flu shots to pregnant women also protects their newborns, researchers say. Flu vaccination is recommended for anyone older than 6 months of age. But it is not approved for children younger than 6 months, who have the highest rates of flu hospitalization among all children. In this study, U.S. researchers analyzed data from about 1,500 babies who were hospitalized for fever and/or respiratory symptoms in their first six months of life and underwent laboratory testing for influenza infection. The results showed that infants born to mothers who received flu vaccination while pregnant were 45 to 48 percent less likely to be hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza. The study appears in the June issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology. "It is recommended that all pregnant women receive the influenza vaccine during pregnancy because it is ... Black Americans With Lupus Have Better Response to Flu Vaccine

Posted 19 May 2011 by Drugs.com

THURSDAY, May 19 – Black Americans with lupus have a higher antibody response to flu vaccination than whites with lupus, a new study says. This may be good news for black Americans with the disease, since patients who had a weak response to the flu vaccine were more likely to experience moderate to severe disease flares following vaccination, compared to patients who had a greater response. As many as 322,000 adults in the United States have systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system produces antibodies that attack the body's own tissues and organs. Immunosuppressive therapy and immune system problems make lupus patients more susceptible to infection, according to the researchers. Because of this increased risk, vaccination against common infectious diseases such as the flu are recommended for lupus patients. In this study, U.S. researchers ... Read more

Parent's Fears Deprive Some Asthmatics of Flu Shot: Study

Posted 18 May 2011 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, May 17 – Concern about vaccine safety is one of the main reasons why some parents in the United States are reluctant to have their asthmatic children vaccinated against the flu, researchers report. The new study also found that parents who don't vaccinate their asthmatic children are less likely to consider flu to be a trigger for their child's asthma. Flu vaccination is recommended for all children, but especially for those with asthma because flu can trigger asthma flare-ups. The study included 237 parents who had at least one child with asthma and took part in a national survey conducted in the summer of 2010. Seventy percent of the parents said they had their child vaccinated against seasonal or H1N1 influenza during the 2009-2010 flu season, and 65 percent said they planned to have their child vaccinated in the 2010-2011 flu season. Parents who didn't vaccinate their ... Read more

Mom's Flu Shot May Protect Baby After Birth

Posted 5 Oct 2010 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, Oct. 5 – When expectant mothers get a flu vaccination, they not only protect themselves throughout their pregnancy but may also help safeguard their babies against flu for the first few months of life. A study published online Oct. 4 in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine found that when women were vaccinated in the second or third trimester of pregnancy, their babies were significantly less likely to get the flu, and the babies' blood showed evidence of antibodies to the flu. "Influenza infection among young infants can be a serious illness," said the study's senior author, Dr. Katherine O'Brien, a pediatrician and professor in the department of international health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore. "There are several ways of protecting young infants against influenza. One is to assure that those in contact with young infants are ... Read more

Men, Women May Respond Differently to Vaccines

Posted 17 May 2010 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, May 17 – Gender can trigger different immune responses and different side effects to particular vaccines, a new analysis suggests. The finding, reported in the May issue of The Lancet Infectious Diseases, stems from a review of prior research concerning vaccines that target a range of diseases including yellow fever, influenza, measles, mumps and rubella, hepatitis and herpes simplex. Hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy were also tracked during the review for their possible effect on vaccines. "Sex can affect the frequency and severity of adverse effects of vaccination, including fever, pain and inflammation," lead author Sabra Klein, an assistant professor in the department of molecular microbiology and immunology at John Hopkins in Baltimore, said in a news release. "This is likely due to the fact that women typically mount stronger immune responses to vaccinations ... Read more
