Natpara Approved for Hormone Disorder Causing Low Blood Calcium

MONDAY, Jan. 26, 2015 – Natpara (parathyroid hormone) has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to control low blood calcium among people with hypoparathyroidism. Hypoparathyroidism is a rare disease that occurs when the body doesn't secrete enough parathyroid hormone, which regulates blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. Hypoparathyroidism is typically caused by malfunctioning or surgically removed parathyroid glands. The condition affects about 60,000 people in the United States, the FDA said in a news release. Symptoms commonly include numbness, tingling, muscle twitching, cramps, abnormal heart rhythm and seizures. Longer-term complications may include kidney damage, kidney stones and cataracts. FDA Approves Natpara (parathyroid horomone) for Hypocalcemia in Patients with Hypoparathyroidism

January 23, 2015 – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Natpara (parathyroid horomone) to control hypocalcemia (low blood calcium levels) in patients with hypoparathyroidism, a rare disease that affects approximately 60,000 people in the United States. Hypoparathyroidism occurs when the body secretes abnormally low levels of parathyroid hormone, which helps regulate calcium and phosphorus levels in the body. Hypoparathyroidism is caused by loss of function of the parathyroid glands and occurs most commonly as a result of surgical removal of the parathyroid glands and more rarely as a result of autoimmune or congenital diseases. Patients with hypoparathyroidism can experience numbness, tingling, muscle twitching, spasms or cramps, abnormal heart rhythm, and seizures as a consequence of low blood calcium levels. FDA Medwatch Alert: Specialty Compounding Sterile Products: FDA Alert - Bacterial Infections

[Update 08/11/2013] FDA News Release is now available.  [Update 08/10/2013] Specialty Compounding, LLC has announced a voluntary nationwide recall of all lots of unexpired sterile products. The recall applies to all unexpired sterile compounded products dispensed since May 9, 2013, including all strengths and dosage forms. The recall was initiated after reports of bacterial infection affecting 15 patients at two Texas hospitals, Corpus Christi Medical Center Doctors Regional and Corpus Christi Medical Center Bay Area, whose treatment included IV infusions of calcium gluconate from Specialty Compounding. There is a potential association between the infections and the medication at this time. Recalled products were distributed directly to hospitals and physician offices in Texas.
