Young Breakfast Skippers Lack Vital Nutrients

THURSDAY, Aug. 17, 2017 – Mom was right – eating breakfast really is important. Without it, kids may not get recommended amounts of nutrients, British researchers suggest. "This study provides evidence that breakfast is key for parents to ensure that their children are getting the nutrition they need," said senior study author Gerda Pot, a lecturer in nutritional sciences at King's College London. The researchers used food diaries to track the diets of more than 800 children aged 4 to 10 and nearly 900 kids aged 11 to 18. Their food intake was tracked from 2008 to 2012. Even a One-Minute Run Might Help a Woman's Bones

MONDAY, July 24, 2017 – Just a minute or two of running every day could strengthen your bones, new research suggests. British scientists found that women who engage in "brief bursts" of any high-intensity, weight-bearing physical activity had 4 percent better bone health than their less active peers. "We don't yet know whether it's better to accumulate this small amount of exercise in bits throughout each day or all at once, and also whether a slightly longer bout of exercise on one or two days per week is just as good as one to two minutes a day," said study author Victoria Stiles. She's a senior lecturer in Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Exeter. THURSDAY, June 22, 2017 – Spending your days cooped up inside an office might mean you're not getting enough vital vitamin D – know as the "sunshine vitamin," researchers report. Canadian researchers found that vitamin D deficiency levels differ by occupation, with people who are closeted indoors faring worse than others. "We know that vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency is prevalent in the population at large. We can now say that occupation is a factor that is important in determining if someone may be vitamin D-deficient or not," said lead researcher Dr. Sebastian Straube. He's an associate professor of preventive medicine at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Vitamin D is found naturally in a few foods, and often added to milk and other products. Many Americans May Be Taking Too Much Vitamin D

TUESDAY, June 20, 2017 – When it comes to vitamin D supplements, it's possible that Americans may be getting too much of a good thing, new research suggests. In 2014, just over 3 percent of U.S. adults took more than 4,000 international units (IUs) of the vitamin daily, exceeding the upper limits of what is considered safe, the researchers said. In 2007-2008, only 0.2 percent did that. For perspective, the recommended daily amount of vitamin D is only 600 IUs for adults aged 70 and younger. For those over 70, the recommendation is 800 IUs a day. "More may not always be better with vitamin D," said study author Mary Rooney, a doctoral student at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. "There's not much research on longer-term health outcomes on high-dose supplements," she said. Multivitamins May Not Help Men's Hearts, Even When Diet Is Poor

FRIDAY, April 7, 2017 – Millions of American men pop a multivitamin each day, but new research shows the pills won't help the heart – even if a man's nutrition is lacking. "Many had thought that men with 'poor' nutritional status at baseline may benefit more from long-term multivitamin use on cardiovascular outcomes; however, we did not see any evidence for this in our recent analysis," study author Howard Sesso, of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, said in a hospital news release. According to background information from the researchers, more than half of older Americans take a multivitamin each day. However, many prior studies have shown little evidence of any health benefit. WEDNESDAY, March 15, 2017 – Men are more likely than women to die after suffering an osteoporosis-related fracture, researchers report. Osteoporosis, a disease where bones become weak and brittle, affects more than 44 million Americans. It contributes to about 2 million fractures a year, with women suffering more of these broken bones than men. "Although women are more likely to sustain an initial, osteoporosis-related 'fragility fracture,' men have similar rates of incurring a subsequent fracture and are at greater risk for mortality after these injuries," said study author Dr. Alan Zhang. Zhang is an orthopaedic surgeon and assistant professor at the University of California, San Francisco. WEDNESDAY, March 8, 2017 – Higher folic acid levels during pregnancy may reduce the risk of high blood pressure in children if their mothers have heart disease risk factors, a new study suggests. "Our study adds further evidence on the early life origins of high blood pressure," said senior corresponding author Dr. Xiaobin Wang, a pediatrician from Boston University. The study was published March 8 in the American Journal of Hypertension. "Our findings raise the possibility that early risk assessment and intervention before conception and during pregnancy may lead to new ways to prevent high blood pressure and its consequences across life span and generations," Wang said in a journal news release. Older Bones Benefit From Dairy Plus Vitamin D

WEDNESDAY, March 1, 2017 – A combination of vitamin D supplements and certain dairy foods may protect against age-related bone loss, a new study indicates. Consumption of milk, yogurt and cheese was associated with higher bone mineral density in the spine and less bone loss in the hip among older adults – but only if they also took vitamin D supplements, researchers said. Vitamin D stimulates calcium absorption, which aids in bone building and prevention of bone loss, according to the researchers from Harvard-affiliated Hebrew Senior Life, and the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. New Guidelines Reaffirm Prenatal Folic Acid to Curb Birth Defects

TUESDAY, Jan. 10, 2017 – In a recommendation that reaffirms previous guidelines, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force said that folic acid supplements reduce the risk of neural tube defects. As it advised in 2009, the independent panel of experts said women who are pregnant or able to get pregnant should take a daily supplement that contains between 400 and 800 micrograms of folic acid to prevent these potentially fatal birth defects. Neural tube defects occur when the brain or spinal cord do not develop properly, leading to serious disabilities or even death. These birth defects take place very early in pregnancy. MRI Helps Assess Fetal Brain Abnormalities: Study

THURSDAY, Dec. 15, 2016 – A follow-up MRI scan after a mid-pregnancy ultrasound could help improve diagnosis of a possible fetal brain abnormality, a new British study reports. Women selected for this study had undergone an ultrasound at 18 to 21 weeks of pregnancy that detected a potential brain abnormality in the fetus. The extra information provided by the follow-up MRI helped doctors give a more accurate diagnosis and advice, according to the study authors. The study was published Dec. 14 in The Lancet. "Adding an MRI scan when a problem is detected provides additional information to support parents making decisions about their pregnancy," said lead author Paul Griffiths.
