Reset Your Taste Buds for Less Sugar

Posted 10 Jul 2017 by

MONDAY, July 10, 2017 – Did you know that flavored yogurt in the United States has a lot more sugar than it does in other countries? That's because our national sweet tooth is out of control. And the more sugar we eat, the more we want. Studies show that replacing sweet foods with sugar-free versions doesn't help. Artificial sweeteners don't satisfy a sugar craving. The answer is to reset your taste buds for less sugar. According to research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, you can do this over a short amount of time, just as it's possible to reduce a desire for salt. Cut back on the amount of sweets you eat every day, but do it gradually. Some experts say going cold turkey can lead to a binge later on. Resist temptation by limiting the cookie and candy stash in your kitchen cabinets. Add fruit to your diet – you'll be getting nutrients along with the ... Read more

When Is It Safe to Drive With Type 1 Diabetes?

Posted 21 Apr 2017 by

THURSDAY, April 20, 2017 – Having type 1 diabetes can raise your chances of crashing while driving, but new research offers a checklist that helps determine whether it is safe for you to get behind the wheel. The wrong amounts of insulin and other blood sugar-lowering medications can trigger dangerously low blood sugar levels, which can cause people to pass out or have seizures, the researchers explained. "People with diabetes need to recognize that they're part of a huge mass of people who have potentially impaired driving, like people with heart disease or narcolepsy. They shouldn't think of themselves as isolated. It's just an issue to deal with," said the author of a new study on diabetes and driving, Daniel Cox. He's a professor in psychiatry, internal medicine and ophthalmology at the University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville. "By no means are we saying that people ... Read more

Sweetened Drinks May Damage Heart, Review Finds

Posted 28 Sep 2015 by

MONDAY, Sept. 28, 2015 – Soft drinks and other sugar-sweetened beverages can seriously damage heart health, a new review finds. The added sugar in sodas, fruit drinks, sweet teas and energy drinks affects the body in ways that increase risk of heart attack, heart disease and stroke, said review author Vasanti Malik, a nutrition research scientist at Harvard's T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston. Consuming one or two servings a day of sugar-sweetened beverages has been linked to a 35 percent greater risk of heart attack or fatal heart disease, a 16 percent increased risk of stroke and as much as a 26 percent increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, the report concluded. "Reducing the consumption of these drinks, it's not going to solve the heart disease epidemic, but it's one step that can have a measurable impact," Malik said. "It's not the only thing that needs to be ... Read more

Gel May Offer Simple Treatment for Newborns With Low Blood Sugar

Posted 26 Sep 2013 by

THURSDAY, Sept. 26 – An easy-to-use gel containing dextrose – a form of sugar – may be an effective way to treat low blood sugar levels in newborns, new research finds. Giving infants two doses of the gel nearly halved the odds of treatment failure for low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia, compared to an inactive placebo, according to study author Jane Harding, at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, and colleagues. "Dextrose gel should be considered for first-line treatment to manage hypoglycemia in late preterm and term babies in the first 48 hours after birth," the researchers concluded in the study published online Sept. 25 in The Lancet. Low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia) can be a serious problem in newborns. It's associated with brain injury and poor neurodevelopmental outcomes, according to study background information. Between 5 percent and 15 percent of newborns may ... Read more
