WEDNESDAY, Aug. 23, 2017 – An inexpensive over-the-counter antioxidant/zinc supplement that may help preserve vision in older people is also cost effective, a new study suggests. The combo pill has been dubbed the "Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS)" supplement, based on trial in which it was studied previously. Dr. Aaron Lee, a researcher on the new trial, said his team found AREDS was "greatly cost-effective for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration, specifically in people who have active wet, age-related macular degeneration in one eye and dry in the other." Lee is assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Washington in Seattle. Macular degeneration is a progressive disease that's a major cause of vision loss in older Americans. THURSDAY, Aug. 17, 2017 – Mom was right – eating breakfast really is important. Without it, kids may not get recommended amounts of nutrients, British researchers suggest. "This study provides evidence that breakfast is key for parents to ensure that their children are getting the nutrition they need," said senior study author Gerda Pot, a lecturer in nutritional sciences at King's College London. The researchers used food diaries to track the diets of more than 800 children aged 4 to 10 and nearly 900 kids aged 11 to 18. Their food intake was tracked from 2008 to 2012. FDA Announces Recall of Some Liquid Pharmaceutical Products

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 16, 2017 – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced a recall of numerous liquid pharmaceutical products because of possible bacterial contamination that could cause severe infections in vulnerable patients. The drugs and dietary supplements, made by PharmaTech LLC in Davie, Fla., include liquid stool softeners, liquid vitamin D drops and liquid multivitamins marketed for infants and children, the agency said in a news release. Reports of the discovery of Burkholderia cepacia bacteria in both Diocto Liquid and Diocto Syrup prompted the voluntary recall by three companies that label PharmaTech products, the FDA said. The three companies are Rugby Laboratories, Major Pharmaceuticals and Leader Brands. British scientists found that women who engage in "brief bursts" of any high-intensity, weight-bearing physical activity had 4 percent better bone health than their less active peers. "We don't yet know whether it's better to accumulate this small amount of exercise in bits throughout each day or all at once, and also whether a slightly longer bout of exercise on one or two days per week is just as good as one to two minutes a day," said study author Victoria Stiles. TUESDAY, July 18, 2017 – When it comes to vitamin supplements, more is not always better, according to a new study that found even high doses of vitamin D don't protect children from colds in the winter. "We may have just busted a myth," said study leader Dr. Jonathon Maguire. "Our findings do not support the routine use of high-dose vitamin D supplementation for the prevention of wintertime upper respiratory tract infections among healthy children," added Maguire. Canadian researchers found that vitamin D deficiency levels differ by occupation, with people who are closeted indoors faring worse than others. "We know that vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency is prevalent in the population at large. We can now say that occupation is a factor that is important in determining if someone may be vitamin D-deficient or not," said lead researcher Dr. Sebastian Straube. Many Americans May Be Taking Too Much Vitamin D

TUESDAY, June 20, 2017 – When it comes to vitamin D supplements, it's possible that Americans may be getting too much of a good thing, new research suggests. In 2014, just over 3 percent of U.S. adults took more than 4,000 international units (IUs) of the vitamin daily, exceeding the upper limits of what is considered safe, the researchers said. In 2007-2008, only 0.2 percent did that. For perspective, the recommended daily amount of vitamin D is only 600 IUs for adults aged 70 and younger. For those over 70, the recommendation is 800 IUs a day. "More may not always be better with vitamin D," said study author Mary Rooney, a doctoral student at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. "There's not much research on longer-term health outcomes on high-dose supplements," she said. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics suggests: Eat plenty of green, leafy vegetables (such as spinach) and orange vegetables (such as sweet potatoes). Eat a variety of proteins, including peas, beans and fish. Eat whole grain cereals, breads and pasta. Aim for at least a 3 oz. serving per day. Enjoy at least three daily servings of vitamin D-fortified dairy products, such as milk, cheese and yogurt. Choose healthier monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. TUESDAY, May 9, 2017 – Vitamin D supplements aren't likely to reduce the risk of asthma, allergies or the skin condition eczema in children or adults, a new study finds. Previous research had suggested that low vitamin D levels were linked with these "atopic" conditions. For the new study, Canadian researchers analyzed data from more than 100,000 people to determine if this was true. The investigators found no statistically significant differences in rates of asthma, allergies or eczema between people with low or normal levels of vitamin D. The results were published online May 9 in the journal PLoS Medicine. "Our findings suggest that previous associations between low vitamin D and atopic disease could be due to spurious associations with other factors," lead study author Despoina Manousaki said in a journal news release. FRIDAY, April 7, 2017 – Millions of American men pop a multivitamin each day, but new research shows the pills won't help the heart – even if a man's nutrition is lacking. "Many had thought that men with 'poor' nutritional status at baseline may benefit more from long-term multivitamin use on cardiovascular outcomes; however, we did not see any evidence for this in our recent analysis," study author Howard Sesso, of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, said in a hospital news release. But, even though the vitamin came up short in this study of more than 5,000 adults, the researchers aren't ready to scrap hopes for vitamin D supplementation altogether. "Our study only rules out monthly dosing," said study lead author Dr. Robert Scragg. His team did not explore whether daily vitamin D supplementation might prove more protective of heart health. TUESDAY, March 28, 2017 – High doses of vitamin D supplements may not lower older women's risk of developing cancer, a new clinical trial finds. Many studies have hinted that vitamin D might help ward off cancer. Some, for example, have found that people with higher blood levels of the vitamin have lower rates of certain cancers, including colon and breast cancers. In lab experiments, vitamin D has also shown activities that might slow the growth of cancer – such as, promoting the death of abnormal cells. But those types of studies cannot prove that taking vitamin D actually causes cancer risk to drop, explained Dr. JoAnn Manson, of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. THURSDAY, March 16, 2017 – Low vitamin D levels are common among college football players and may put them at increased risk for injuries, a new study suggests. "Vitamin D has been shown to play a role in muscle function and strength," said senior study author Dr. Scott Rodeo, co-chief emeritus of the sports medicine and shoulder service at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. "While most prior studies have focused on the aging population as the group most likely to experience the harmful effects of inadequate vitamin D, few reports have looked at the impact on muscle injury and function in the high-performance athlete," he said in a hospital news release. Osteoporosis, a disease where bones become weak and brittle, affects more than 44 million Americans. It contributes to about 2 million fractures a year, with women suffering more of these broken bones than men. "Although women are more likely to sustain an initial, osteoporosis-related 'fragility fracture,' men have similar rates of incurring a subsequent fracture and are at greater risk for mortality after these injuries," said study author Dr. Alan Zhang.
