For City Kids With Asthma, Nearby Green Space Is Key

Posted 11 days ago by Drugs.com

FRIDAY, Sept. 8, 2017 – Living near a park can help reduce asthma symptoms among children who live in cities, researchers say. The new study included 196 inner-city children in Baltimore, aged 3 to 12 years, with persistent asthma. Some lived close to a park or other green space, while others were more than 0.6 miles away from one. The farther the children lived from a park, the more asthma symptoms they had over a two-week period, the study found. For every 1,000 feet between their home and a park, children had symptoms one extra day. Kids who lived next to a park averaged five days with symptoms over two weeks. A child who lived 1,000 feet from the park averaged six days with symptoms, according to the study scheduled to be presented Sept. 11 at a European Respiratory Society meeting in Milan, Italy. "Living in a city environment increases the risk of childhood asthma, and factors ... Read more

New 'Biologic' Drug May Help Severe Asthma

Posted 13 days ago by Drugs.com

WEDNESDAY, Sept. 6, 2017 – A "biologic" drug in development to treat severe asthma reduces the rate of serious attacks by about two-thirds compared to a placebo drug, according to preliminary research findings. If approved, the drug, tezepelumab, could join a group of costly medications that appear to offer relief when nothing else curbs respiratory distress. "A new era has begun in which many new drugs are being developed for patients with severe asthma," said Dr. Elisabeth Bel, a professor of respiratory medicine at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. "Similar to what has happened for rheumatoid arthritis, I expect that in a few years effective treatments will be available for almost all patients with severe asthma," said Bel, author of a commentary accompanying the new study. The new research was funded by the drug's developers, Amgen and MedImmune, a subsidiary of ... Read more

Health Tip: Back to School for Kids with Asthma

Posted 29 Aug 2017 by Drugs.com

-- If your child has asthma, it's important to start the school year with an up-to-date asthma action plan. The American Lung Association suggests what to do: Schedule a check-up with your child's doctor. During the visit, discuss the effectiveness of all asthma meds and doses. Make sure the school nurse, teachers, coaches and anyone else who assists with your child's care has a copy of the action plan. Assess your child's ability to self-carry medication. Read more

Nearly 4 Million Worldwide Die Each Year From Asthma, COPD

Posted 17 Aug 2017 by Drugs.com

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 16, 2017 – Two major chronic lung diseases – asthma and COPD – kill nearly 4 million people worldwide annually, a new report finds. The study calculates that 3.2 million people died in 2015 from COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) – a group of lung conditions that includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, often tied to smoking. Asthma caused another 400,000 deaths, the report found. While asthma is more common, COPD is much more deadly. And while both conditions can be treated, many people remain undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. In addition, in many countries, treatment – if it exists at all – may be at insufficient levels, the research team added. "Although much of the burden [from these illnesses] is either preventable or treatable with affordable interventions, these diseases have received less attention than other prominent non-communicable diseases like ... Asthma Control Essential in Pregnancy, Study Suggests

Posted 14 Jul 2017 by Drugs.com

FRIDAY, July 14, 2017 – Children whose mothers had uncontrolled asthma during pregnancy are at increased risk of developing the disease at a young age, a new study finds. The findings suggest that "maintaining asthma control during pregnancy is an area for possible prevention of asthma in future generations," lead author Xiaoqin Liu said. Researchers analyzed data from nearly 7,200 children in Denmark who were born to mothers with active asthma during pregnancy. Those born to mothers who had mild controlled asthma were less likely to be diagnosed with asthma at an early age than those whose moms had mild uncontrolled asthma, moderate-to-severe controlled asthma, or moderate-to-severe uncontrolled asthma during pregnancy, the study found. The study was published online July 13 in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases in ... Read more

Replace Coal With Solar Power to Save Money, Lives

Posted 6 Jun 2017 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, June 6, 2017 – Replacing coal with solar power would save American lives and money, according to a new study. "If we're rational and we care about American lives – or even just money – then it's time to end coal in the U.S.," said study co-author Joshua Pearce. He is an associate professor of materials science and electrical engineering at Michigan Technological University. Tens of thousands of Americans die early due to health issues linked to air pollution. Michigan Tech researchers calculated the human toll of burning coal along with the possible benefits of switching to solar power. They analyzed regional electric costs and calculated the number of U.S. deaths per kilowatt hour each year for coal as well as solar power. They also estimated the potential return on investment of solar installations using U.S. Department of Energy data. The study found that if the United ... Read more

Take Control of Your Asthma

Posted 7 May 2017 by Drugs.com

SATURDAY, May 6, 2017 – Many resources can help people with asthma manage triggers and symptoms, an allergist says. "It's time to make people aware of useful tools to help control asthma," said Dr. Stephen Tilles, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). People sometimes think their asthma is under control when it really isn't, Tilles said in a college news release. The ACAAI offers the following advice: The "Rule of Twos" is a handy gauge for patients. Signs that your asthma is not under control: You have asthma symptoms or use an inhaler more than twice a week; you wake up at night with symptoms more than twice a month; or you refill your quick-relief medication more than twice a year. These are other signs: You have unusual or hard-to-diagnose symptoms; have had a life-threatening asthma attack or have been hospitalized; or have hay fever or sinus ... Read more

Mite-Proof Bedding May Help Curb Asthma Attacks: Study

Posted 10 Mar 2017 by Drugs.com

FRIDAY, March 10, 2017 – Children with asthma have fewer flare-ups when their beds have mite-proof covers, a new study suggests. Dust mites are one of the most common asthma triggers. The study included 284 children in England with asthma and dust mite allergy. Their mattresses and pillows were encased with mite-proof or placebo covers. They were tracked for a year. During that time, about 29 percent of the kids with mite-proof covers had a severe flare-up that led to a hospital visit, compared to about 42 percent of the other kids. Children with protective bedding also went much longer before having a flare-up that led to an emergency room visit or hospital stay for treatment with systemic corticosteroids. But they did not have a significantly lower risk of flare-ups that were treated outside the hospital with only an oral corticosteroid. The researchers said the bedcovers may not ... Read more

Banishing Asthma-Inducing Mice Allergens on the Cheap

Posted 7 Mar 2017 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, March 7, 2017 – Professional pest management may not be needed to control asthma in kids with a mouse allergy, researchers say. Mice are a common cause of asthma flare-ups in low-income urban neighborhoods, according to prior research. In this new study, scientists found that teaching families how to reduce mice allergens on their own can help control children's asthma symptoms about as well as paying an outside expert to do the job. "Our findings suggest that giving families good instructions about how to reduce the mouse allergens that trigger asthma in their children may be enough to get the job done and, consequently, improve asthma symptoms," said study lead author Dr. Elizabeth Matsui. She's a professor of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. About 7 million children in the United States have asthma – a chronic lung disease that ... Read more

Obesity May Raise Girls' Risk of Asthma, Allergies

Posted 6 Mar 2017 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, March 6, 2017 – Obese girls may face a significantly higher risk for developing allergies, a new study suggests. But the researchers found the opposite was true for obese boys: They may actually face a slightly diminished risk for asthma, food allergies and eczema when compared to normal-weight boys. "We found a direct increase in the number of atopic [allergic] diseases associated with obesity in urban female children and teenagers, but not in males," said study co-author Dr. Sairaman Nagarajan. He's a resident physician in the department of pediatrics at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York City. "These results were highly significant, even after adjusting for the effects of age and race," he said. Nagarajan and his colleagues were scheduled to present their findings Monday at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI), in Atlanta. ... Read more

There's Fun and Fitness in the Pool for Asthmatic Kids

Posted 20 Feb 2017 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Feb. 20, 2017 – Safe, healthy fun for kids with asthma may be as near as the neighborhood pool, one respiratory specialist says. Staying active can be a challenge for the more than 6 million children with asthma in the United States, noted Dr. Tod Olin. He's a pediatric pulmonary specialist at National Jewish Health in Denver. "It can be a dilemma for many families. All it takes is one asthma attack, and suddenly patients can become very tentative about overdoing it," he said in a hospital news release. "When it comes to cardio activities that are well-tolerated, swimming, specifically, is highly recommended, particularly in indoor swimming pools," Olin said. The high humidity in indoor swimming pools protects against asthma attacks by keeping airways open, he said. "We think that the way asthma attacks happen is that the airways dry out, and that sets off a cascade of ... Read more

Low-Income Kids More Likely to Have ADHD, Asthma

Posted 14 Feb 2017 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, Feb. 14, 2017 – Children in families struggling to make ends meet are developing asthma and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) at faster rates than kids from families with greater means, a new study finds. On the other hand, kids from wealthier families are being diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder more often than children in poorer homes. But that likely indicates that those parents have better access to the health care services that can uncover an autism diagnosis, the study authors said. The findings suggest that family income and access to health insurance play a large role in a child's physical and mental health, said lead researcher Dr. Christian Pulcini. He's a pediatrics resident with the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. "Children in poverty are more at risk for adverse health outcomes, and we need to keep that in mind when we make policy and ... Childhood Asthma May Encourage Obesity, Study Suggests

Posted 20 Jan 2017 by Drugs.com

FRIDAY, Jan. 20, 2017 – A young child with asthma has a greater risk of obesity than one without the chronic respiratory condition, a new study suggests. Among nearly 2,200 elementary school students in California, researchers found that childhood asthma was linked to a 51 percent increased risk of obesity over the next 10 years. "I was surprised it was that substantial," said study senior author Dr. Frank Gilliland. He is a professor of preventive medicine at the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles. However, kids who used "rescue" inhalers were less likely to become obese compared to those who did not treat flare-ups, the investigators found. Prevalence of obesity and asthma has increased dramatically over the past several decades, and researchers suspect there's a biological connection between the two. Previous research has shown obese children ... Read more

1 in 3 Adults Diagnosed With Asthma May Not Have It: Study

Posted 17 Jan 2017 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, Jan. 17, 2017 – Many adults who've been diagnosed with asthma may not actually have the respiratory disease, a new study suggests. Researchers in Canada said that of more than 600 adults diagnosed with asthma, one-third did not have the disease based on objective tests. Eighty percent of those people had been taking asthma drugs. That included 35 percent who were taking medication every day, the investigators found. Respiratory experts said the findings are worrying, considering the cost and side effects of asthma drugs. And it's not completely clear why so many patients with an asthma diagnosis did not really have the disease. There were some cases where people obviously had asthma when they were diagnosed, said lead researcher Dr. Shawn Aaron, a respiratory specialist at Ottawa Hospital, in Canada. But their symptoms later went into remission. In most cases, though, it could ... Read more

Airway Differences May Explain Why Asthma Can Be More Serious for Blacks

Posted 13 Jan 2017 by Drugs.com

FRIDAY, Jan. 13, 2017 – Differences in airway inflammation may be one reason why black people with asthma are less responsive to treatment and more likely to die from the disease than white people, a new study suggests. Asthma is a chronic lung disease, and airway inflammation is a major component of asthma. The inflammation causes the airways to swell and become more sensitive, which eventually leads to symptoms such as wheezing and shortness of breath, according to the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. "Emerging evidence suggests that differences in airway inflammation can affect a patient's response to treatment, but whether the patterns of airway inflammation vary across race has, until now, been very unclear," said study corresponding author Dr. Sharmilee Nyenhuis. She's an allergy, asthma and immunology specialist at University of Illinois at Chicago. Blacks are two ... Read more
