MONDAY, Feb. 27, 2017 – Juicing may be a popular health fad, but evidence suggests it could actually be detrimental to a good diet. The same goes for coconut oil, which is loaded with saturated fat but has emerged as another dietary craze in the United States. And a gluten-free diet likely has little positive health benefit for people who do not have gluten sensitivity or celiac disease. These conclusions are part of a new review of the latest scientific evidence on food and nutrition that was conducted to shed some light on the latest diet fads. Exercise a Powerful Ally for Breast Cancer Survivors

TUESDAY, Feb. 21, 2017 – For breast cancer survivors, exercise may help lower their chances of dying from the disease more than other healthy habits, a new review suggests. The Canadian researchers analyzed 67 published articles to see which habits made the most difference in reducing the risk of either breast cancer recurrence or death. Exercise came out on top, reducing the risk of breast cancer death by about 40 percent, said review author Dr. Ellen Warner, a medical oncologist at Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Centre and a professor at the University of Toronto. "It's similar to the magnitude of chemotherapy or hormone therapy," she said. "So, that's pretty powerful." However, the review did not prove that exercise causes breast cancer risk to drop. THURSDAY, Feb. 16, 2017 – High blood levels of "active" vitamin D may boost muscle strength, a new study suggests. British investigators measured both inactive and active vitamin D levels, fat levels and muscle mass in 116 healthy adult volunteers, aged 20 to 74. People with higher levels of active vitamin D in the blood had more lean muscle mass and bulk, the investigators found. "By looking at multiple forms [of vitamin D] in the same study, we can say that it is a more complex relationship than previously thought," said study author Zaki Hassan-Smith, from the University of Birmingham. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics suggests these foods: Offer a good source of calcium at each meal, such as milk, cheese, yogurt, almonds, figs, broccoli, soybeans, turnip greens or tofu with calcium added. Seek natural sunshine for more vitamin D. Also offer eggs, fatty fish and fortified foods, such as milk and orange juice. Ask your pediatrician if your child needs vitamin D supplements. Give your child edamame, black beans, spinach, peanut butter, almonds, kidney beans, avocado and whole-wheat bread, which are good sources of magnesium. Vitamin D Linked to Lower Risk of Respiratory Infections

THURSDAY, Feb. 16, 2017 – There's preliminary evidence that adequate amounts of vitamin D might help lower rates of respiratory infections. These infections include colds, bronchitis and pneumonia, the researchers said. In a review of past trials of people taking vitamin D supplements, researchers from Queen Mary University in London found that supplementation was linked to a 12 percent reduction in the proportion of people having an "acute respiratory infection." The researchers said their findings "support the introduction of public health measures such as food fortification to improve vitamin D status in settings where profound vitamin D deficiency is common." But not everyone agrees with the authors of the review, which was published Feb. 15 in the BMJ. THURSDAY, Dec. 1, 2016 – Spending more time outside early in life may offer some protection against nearsightedness, a new study suggests. The European study authors suspect that additional exposure to the sun's ultraviolet B (UVB) rays may play a role in reducing nearsightedness – the inability to see clearly at a distance, also known as myopia. "We found that higher annual lifetime UVB exposure, directly related to time outdoors and sunlight exposure, was associated with reduced odds of myopia," the study authors wrote. "Exposure to UVB between ages 14 and 29 years was associated with the highest reduction in odds of adult myopia," they added. The findings don't "add a lot to the picture" of current research that links nearsightedness to time outdoors, said Ian Morgan, a vision researcher and visiting fellow at Australian National University. THURSDAY, Dec. 1, 2016 – Newborns with low levels of vitamin D may have higher odds of developing multiple sclerosis (MS) later in life, new research suggests. Vitamin D deficiency is common among the general population, including pregnant women. But the researchers said it's too soon to routinely recommend "sunshine vitamin" supplements for mothers-to-be. "The study does not prove that increasing vitamin D levels reduces the risk of MS. Further studies are needed to confirm our results," said study leader Dr. Nete Munk Nielsen, a researcher at the Statens Serum Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark. Menopause Before 40? Risk of Broken Bones May Be Higher

FRIDAY, Nov. 11, 2016 – Women who undergo menopause before age 40 are more likely to get broken bones, and a new study suggests calcium and vitamin D supplements won't eliminate the extra risk. Researchers were disappointed by the finding because supplements and hormone replacement therapy have been thought to improve bone health. The researchers were led by Dr. Shannon Sullivan, medical officer from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. They examined the medical records of almost 22,000 women who took part in the Women's Health Initiative. This 15-year study, by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, reviewed the most common causes of poor health and death among postmenopausal women. Vitamin D May Affect Breast Cancer Survival

THURSDAY, Nov. 10, 2016 – Vitamin D levels may affect breast cancer patients' chances of survival, a new study suggests. Researchers analyzed data from nearly 1,700 breast cancer patients in California and found that higher vitamin D levels at diagnosis were associated with better overall survival. This link was strongest in premenopausal women. Researchers found lower vitamin D levels in patients with advanced-stage tumors and the lowest levels in premenopausal women with triple-negative cancer. Triple-negative cancer is the most common type of breast cancer found in women with changes in a gene called BRCA1. Low Vitamin D Levels May Raise Bladder Cancer Risk: Study

TUESDAY, Nov. 8, 2016 – Low vitamin D levels may increase the risk of bladder cancer, researchers report. Five of seven studies the researchers reviewed linked low vitamin D levels with an higher risk of bladder cancer. In experiments with the cells that line the bladder, the researchers found that the cells activate and respond to vitamin D. This, in turn, can stimulate an immune response, the study authors said. The finding is important because the immune system may help prevent cancer by identifying and destroying abnormal cells before they develop into cancer, according to lead author Rosemary Bland, an honorary associate professor at the University of Warwick in England. MONDAY, Oct. 24, 2016 – Calcium supplements, taken within recommended levels, can be considered safe for the heart, according to new guidelines. Over the past decade, a number of studies have raised questions about whether calcium supplements might contribute to heart disease or stroke. Just this month, a study of U.S. adults found that supplement users were more likely than nonusers to have plaque buildup in their heart arteries. (Calcium is a component of artery-clogging "plaques.") But a new research review, commissioned by the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), has come to a different conclusion. TUESDAY, Oct. 11, 2016 – New research suggests that dietary calcium in the form of supplements, but not calcium-rich foods, might have a harmful impact on the heart. The study couldn't prove the supplements help cause heart trouble, but its authors believe the finding should give consumers pause for thought. "When it comes to using vitamin and mineral supplements, particularly calcium supplements being taken for bone health, many Americans think that more is always better," said study lead author Dr. Erin Michos. Americans Are Changing Their Supplements of Choice

TUESDAY, Oct. 11, 2016 – Traditional multivitamins are falling out of favor among Americans, while supplements such as vitamin D, fish oil and probiotics are gaining ground, a new study finds. Researchers found that between 1999 and 2012, Americans' overall use of supplements remained stable. Slightly more than half of adults said they took vitamins, minerals or some other type of dietary supplement. What's changed are the products of choice. Multivitamins and many individual vitamins and minerals are less popular, as are botanicals such as echinacea, ginseng and garlic extracts, the investigators found. On the other hand, more people are using vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids and probiotics – "good" bacteria said to benefit the digestive system. Researchers said the findings make sense.
