Multivitamins May Not Help Men's Hearts, Even When Diet Is Poor

FRIDAY, April 7, 2017 – Millions of American men pop a multivitamin each day, but new research shows the pills won't help the heart – even if a man's nutrition is lacking. "Many had thought that men with 'poor' nutritional status at baseline may benefit more from long-term multivitamin use on cardiovascular outcomes; however, we did not see any evidence for this in our recent analysis," study author Howard Sesso, of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, said in a hospital news release. According to background information from the researchers, more than half of older Americans take a multivitamin each day. However, many prior studies have shown little evidence of any health benefit. High-Dose Vitamin D Failed to Curb Heart Disease in Study

WEDNESDAY, April 5, 2017 – Taking high doses of vitamin D once a month won't lower your risk for heart disease, new research indicates. But, even though the vitamin came up short in this study of more than 5,000 adults, the researchers aren't ready to scrap hopes for vitamin D supplementation altogether. "Our study only rules out monthly dosing," said study lead author Dr. Robert Scragg. His team did not explore whether daily vitamin D supplementation might prove more protective of heart health. Scragg is a professor of epidemiology at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Previous studies have reported higher chances of heart disease among people with low vitamin D intake. High Doses of Vitamin D Fail to Cut Cancer Risk, Study Finds

TUESDAY, March 28, 2017 – High doses of vitamin D supplements may not lower older women's risk of developing cancer, a new clinical trial finds. Many studies have hinted that vitamin D might help ward off cancer. Some, for example, have found that people with higher blood levels of the vitamin have lower rates of certain cancers, including colon and breast cancers. In lab experiments, vitamin D has also shown activities that might slow the growth of cancer – such as, promoting the death of abnormal cells. But those types of studies cannot prove that taking vitamin D actually causes cancer risk to drop, explained Dr. JoAnn Manson, of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. Many College Football Players Lack Vitamin D: Study

THURSDAY, March 16, 2017 – Low vitamin D levels are common among college football players and may put them at increased risk for injuries, a new study suggests. "Vitamin D has been shown to play a role in muscle function and strength," said senior study author Dr. Scott Rodeo, co-chief emeritus of the sports medicine and shoulder service at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. "While most prior studies have focused on the aging population as the group most likely to experience the harmful effects of inadequate vitamin D, few reports have looked at the impact on muscle injury and function in the high-performance athlete," he said in a hospital news release. In the study, Rodeo's team assessed 214 college football players, average age 22. Osteoporosis Fractures May Be Deadlier for Men

WEDNESDAY, March 15, 2017 – Men are more likely than women to die after suffering an osteoporosis-related fracture, researchers report. Osteoporosis, a disease where bones become weak and brittle, affects more than 44 million Americans. It contributes to about 2 million fractures a year, with women suffering more of these broken bones than men. "Although women are more likely to sustain an initial, osteoporosis-related 'fragility fracture,' men have similar rates of incurring a subsequent fracture and are at greater risk for mortality after these injuries," said study author Dr. Alan Zhang. Zhang is an orthopaedic surgeon and assistant professor at the University of California, San Francisco. Controversial MS Treatment Seems Ineffective

WEDNESDAY, March 8, 2017 – An invasive multiple sclerosis treatment called liberation therapy is not only costly, it's also ineffective, new research contends. Since 2009, thousands of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients have undergone the controversial treatment. Liberation therapy involves opening up narrowed veins from the brain and spinal cord. However, many specialists have had doubts about the success of the procedure, the study authors said in background notes. In this Canadian study, 49 MS patients underwent liberation therapy and 55 other patients received a sham procedure. One year later, brain scans, doctors' reports and patient self-assessments of MS symptoms found no differences between the two groups of patients. Older Bones Benefit From Dairy Plus Vitamin D

WEDNESDAY, March 1, 2017 – A combination of vitamin D supplements and certain dairy foods may protect against age-related bone loss, a new study indicates. Consumption of milk, yogurt and cheese was associated with higher bone mineral density in the spine and less bone loss in the hip among older adults – but only if they also took vitamin D supplements, researchers said. Vitamin D stimulates calcium absorption, which aids in bone building and prevention of bone loss, according to the researchers from Harvard-affiliated Hebrew Senior Life, and the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. TUESDAY, Feb. 21, 2017 – For breast cancer survivors, exercise may help lower their chances of dying from the disease more than other healthy habits, a new review suggests. The Canadian researchers analyzed 67 published articles to see which habits made the most difference in reducing the risk of either breast cancer recurrence or death. Exercise came out on top, reducing the risk of breast cancer death by about 40 percent, said review author Dr. Ellen Warner, a medical oncologist at Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Centre and a professor at the University of Toronto. "It's similar to the magnitude of chemotherapy or hormone therapy," she said. "So, that's pretty powerful." However, the review did not prove that exercise causes breast cancer risk to drop. THURSDAY, Feb. 16, 2017 – High blood levels of "active" vitamin D may boost muscle strength, a new study suggests. British investigators measured both inactive and active vitamin D levels, fat levels and muscle mass in 116 healthy adult volunteers, aged 20 to 74. People with higher levels of active vitamin D in the blood had more lean muscle mass and bulk, the investigators found. "By looking at multiple forms [of vitamin D] in the same study, we can say that it is a more complex relationship than previously thought," said study author Zaki Hassan-Smith, from the University of Birmingham. Vitamin D Linked to Lower Risk of Respiratory Infections

THURSDAY, Feb. 16, 2017 – There's preliminary evidence that adequate amounts of vitamin D might help lower rates of respiratory infections. These infections include colds, bronchitis and pneumonia, the researchers said. In a review of past trials of people taking vitamin D supplements, researchers from Queen Mary University in London found that supplementation was linked to a 12 percent reduction in the proportion of people having an "acute respiratory infection." The researchers said their findings "support the introduction of public health measures such as food fortification to improve vitamin D status in settings where profound vitamin D deficiency is common." But not everyone agrees with the authors of the review, which was published Feb. 15 in the BMJ. THURSDAY, Dec. 1, 2016 – Spending more time outside early in life may offer some protection against nearsightedness, a new study suggests. The European study authors suspect that additional exposure to the sun's ultraviolet B (UVB) rays may play a role in reducing nearsightedness – the inability to see clearly at a distance, also known as myopia. "We found that higher annual lifetime UVB exposure, directly related to time outdoors and sunlight exposure, was associated with reduced odds of myopia," the study authors wrote. "Exposure to UVB between ages 14 and 29 years was associated with the highest reduction in odds of adult myopia," they added. The findings don't "add a lot to the picture" of current research that links nearsightedness to time outdoors, said Ian Morgan, a vision researcher and visiting fellow at Australian National University.
