Could Your Coffee Habit Lengthen Your Life?

Posted 18 days ago by Drugs.com

THURSDAY, Nov. 30, 2017 – Drinking three to four cups of coffee a day is not only safe for most people, it might protect against heart disease or an early death, a new review suggests. The finding, which applies to so-called "moderate" coffee drinking, stems from a review of more than 200 previous studies. The fresh analysis also linked moderate coffee drinking to a lower risk for developing prostate, endometrial, skin and liver cancers, type 2 diabetes, liver disease, gout, gallstones and dementia. Some of the studies in the review also showed a lower risk for Parkinson's disease, depression and Alzheimer's. However, the review did not prove that coffee drinking caused these health risks to drop. And it also found that coffee may be somewhat problematic for pregnant women and slightly increases the risk for fracture among all women. The review was led by Dr. Robin Poole, a specialist ... Coffee May Be Kind to Your Kidneys

Posted 3 Nov 2017 by Drugs.com

FRIDAY, Nov. 3, 2017 – Can caffeine help people with chronic kidney disease live longer? That's the suggestion of a new study that found that among more than 2,300 Americans with chronic kidney disease, those who drank the most caffeinated drinks reduced their risk of premature death by 24 percent. "Our study showed a dose-dependent protective effect of caffeine consumption on all-cause mortality among patients with chronic kidney disease," said lead researcher Dr. Miguel Bigotte Vieira, from the Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Norte, in Lisbon, Portugal. "However, our observational study cannot prove that caffeine reduces the risk of death, but only suggests the possibility of such a protective effect," he said. Moreover, the reasons that caffeine might be protective aren't clear, and how much caffeine is too little and how much might be too much also isn't known, Bigotte Vieira added. The ... Read more

Coffee Doesn't Help Parkinson's Motor Disorders

Posted 28 Sep 2017 by Drugs.com

THURSDAY, Sept. 28, 2017 – Regular cups of coffee will not ease tremors and movement problems caused by Parkinson's disease, despite prior evidence that caffeine might help, a new clinical trial reports. Earlier short-term results from the same trial had shown caffeine improved the motor function of a small group of Parkinson patients, researchers said. But long-term results from the trial now show that patients received no benefit from caffeine by six to 18 months after starting therapy, said lead researcher Dr. Ronald Postuma, an associate professor of neurology at McGill University Health Center in Montreal. "Caffeine made no difference to Parkinson's," Postuma said. "You can't use it as a medication for Parkinson's." The findings will be disappointing for many Parkinson's patients who turned to coffee to help their symptoms. The first results from the caffeine trial made a big ... Read more

Can Coffee or Tea Extend Survival With Diabetes?

Posted 14 Sep 2017 by Drugs.com

THURSDAY, Sept. 14, 2017 – A diagnosis of diabetes comes with a long list of "don'ts." But new research suggests that coffee and tea probably shouldn't be off-limits because each may help prevent an early death. Well, at least if you're a woman with diabetes, that is. Men with diabetes didn't seem to reap the rewards of consuming caffeine in the new study. The research found that women with diabetes who had up to one regular cup of coffee a day (100 milligrams of caffeine) were 51 percent less likely to die than women who consumed no caffeine during the 11-year study. "As caffeine is consumed by more than 80 percent of the world's adult population, it is essential to understand the impact of this factor concerning cardiovascular, cancer and all-cause mortality," said study researcher Dr. Joao Sergio Neves, an endocrinology resident at Sao Joao Hospital Center in Porto, Portugal. "Our ... Read more

Health Tip: Avoid These Beverages to Fight Insomnia

Posted 4 Sep 2017 by Drugs.com

-- Traveling between time zones can create havoc with your ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. But you can improve your odds by avoiding certain beverages, the National Sleep Foundation says. Here are the foundation's suggestions for what to remove from your diet while you're traveling long distances: Caffeine – A cup of coffee can produce a stimulating effect as soon as 15 minutes after drinking it. And it can affect your sleep pattern for about six hours. So don't drink coffee at 4 p.m. and expect to fall asleep quickly at 9 p.m. Alcohol – Alcohol can initially make someone feel sleepy, but it actually affects chemicals in your body that tell you when to wake up and when to sleep. While you might fall asleep quickly after a glass of wine, you may end up feeling wide awake in the middle of the night. Soda – The carbonation in soda can cause bloating and stomach pressure, ... Drink Coffee, Live Longer?

Posted 28 Aug 2017 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Aug. 28, 2017 – That morning cup of coffee may be doing more than serving up a needed caffeine jolt – it may be adding years to your life. At least that's the conclusion of a preliminary study that suggests – but doesn't prove – that coffee is associated with a lower risk of death in the next 10 years. "Our findings suggest that drinking four cups of coffee each day can be part of a healthy diet in healthy people," said researcher Dr. Adela Navarro, a cardiologist at Hospital de Navarra in Pamplona, Spain. The findings were presented Sunday at the European Society of Cardiology Congress, in Barcelona. For the study, researchers investigated the association between coffee consumption and risk of death. The observational study involved about 20,000 middle-aged people from the Mediterranean region. The participants were 37 years old, on average, at the start of the study and ... Read more

Health Tip: Combat Jet Lag

Posted 24 Aug 2017 by Drugs.com

-- You can't always prevent jet lag, but there are things you can do to minimize symptoms, the National Sleep Foundation says. Here's the foundation's advice: Once you get to your destination, get some rays to help sync your internal clock to the time zone. Don't nap while traveling. Avoid caffeine and alcohol. Before you go to sleep at your destination, turn off your cell phone so you won't be disturbed. Read more

A Shot of Caffeine May Speed Wake-Up After Anesthesia

Posted 21 Aug 2017 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Aug. 21, 2017 – Caffeine may help patients wake up more quickly after general anesthesia, an animal study suggests. Adult rats were given a 3 percent concentration of a general anesthetic for one hour to simulate effects of a brief surgical procedure. During the last 10 minutes of anesthetic exposure, they received an injection of either caffeine or a salt solution (the control group). The experiment was repeated three times with increasingly higher amounts of caffeine. Each time, rats in the caffeine group woke faster than the others. At the highest dose, the rats in the caffeine group woke up 55 percent sooner than the control group. The researchers said caffeine appears to shorten anesthesia recovery time in two ways. Caffeine boosts levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), a compound that regulates cell function. Previous studies have found an increase in cAMP ... Read more

Health Tip: Help Kids Sleep Better

Posted 26 Jul 2017 by Drugs.com

-- Getting children to go to sleep and stay asleep may be a true challenge for parents. The National Sleep Foundation says these factors may prevent kids from getting a good night's rest: Bed-wetting, which may affect kids until age 5, and sometimes older. Parents should stay calm and offer praise and rewards (such as stickers) for making it through the night dry. Nightmares, which are partly a result of toddlers' developing imaginations. Parents should avoid talking directly about a nightmare, which may make things worse. Instead, offer soothing reassurance to help your child fall back to sleep. Caffeine, which can keep kids awake or wake them up. So make sure your kids don't have caffeinated drinks at dinner. Use of smartphones, tablets or computers, which can interfere with sleep. So don't let children keep these devices in their rooms, and turn them off well before bed. Read more

Daily Jolt of Java May Bring Longer Life

Posted 10 Jul 2017 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, July 10, 2017 – Here's news to perk up your day: Drinking coffee might help you live a little longer, two new studies suggest. Researchers found that daily coffee drinkers were up to 18 percent less likely to die over the next 10 to 16 years, versus non-drinkers. The findings – based on over 700,000 middle-aged and older adults – add to the growing list of benefits linked to moderate coffee drinking. Studies have already tied the habit to lower risks of various diseases – from heart disease and type 2 diabetes, to liver cancer, to neurological diseases like Parkinson's and multiple sclerosis. None of those studies prove coffee, per se, provides the benefit. And it's unlikely that doctors will start recommending coffee as some sort of elixir, according to Veronica Setiawan, the senior researcher on one of the studies. "But if you've always been a coffee drinker," she said, ... Read more

Can Coffee, Tea Protect the Liver From 'Western' Diet?

Posted 13 Jun 2017 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, June 13, 2017 – Regularly drinking coffee or herbal tea may help prevent chronic liver disease, new research suggests. Scientists in the Netherlands found these popular beverages might help thwart liver fibrosis, or stiffness and scarring due to chronic inflammation. "Over the past decades, we gradually deviated towards more unhealthy habits, including a sedentary lifestyle, decreased physical activity, and consumption of a 'happy diet,' " said study lead author Dr. Louise Alferink. This "happy diet" – commonly known as the Western diet – is rich in sugary, processed foods that lack nutrients. This unhealthy way of eating has contributed to the obesity epidemic and a surge in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, which occurs when excessive amounts of fat accumulate in the liver, said Alferink, a researcher at Erasmus MC University Medical Centre in Rotterdam. To investigate the ... Read more

Energy Drinks May Make Rare Heart Condition More Dangerous

Posted 9 May 2017 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, May 9, 2017 – Energy drinks can be deadly for people with a certain genetic heart condition, a small study warns. Called long QT syndrome (LQTS), the condition affects 1 in 2,000 people and can cause a rapid, irregular heartbeat that can sometimes be fatal. "The potential cardiovascular risk of energy drinks continues to emerge as an important public health issue," said lead investigator Christopher Semsarian, a professor at the University of Sydney in Australia. "The population most at risk is teenagers and young adults, representing the population these drinks are most heavily marketed towards. Since energy drinks are widely available to all ages and over the counter, it is important that cardiovascular effects of these drinks are investigated," he added. Previous research has shown that energy drinks can cause serious heart problems in people without genetic heart disease, ... Read more

Need More Zzzzz's?

Posted 25 Mar 2017 by Drugs.com

FRIDAY, March 24, 2017 – A good night's sleep is often elusive, but there are things you can do to boost the odds of getting some quality shuteye, sleep experts say. The first is to have regular bed and wake times, according to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital sleep doctors Dr. Daniel Barone and Dr. Andrew Westwood. The doctors suggested going to sleep at the same time each night and waking up at the same time each morning, even on weekends and vacation days. That's because changes between workdays and days off may impair your sleep and how you feel during the daytime. Avoid caffeine in the late afternoon and evening, they advised. Instead of coffee, tea, cola and chocolate, choose water, seltzer, unsweetened decaffeinated herbal tea and other caffeine-free beverages. It's also important to eat a healthy diet and be physically active. "Regular exercise and maintaining a healthy diet that ... Read more

Do Energy Drinks Plus Booze Equal More Injuries?

Posted 21 Mar 2017 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, March 21, 2017 – Mixing caffeine-loaded energy drinks and booze could be a recipe for trouble. That's the word from a new study that says the popular party duo ups the odds someone will get hurt. Researchers in Canada analyzed results of 13 prior studies. Most reported a higher rate of injuries when alcohol was paired with an energy drink like Red Bull or Monster Energy compared to drinking alcohol alone, they said. "Current research generally supports a relationship between consuming alcohol mixed with energy drinks and an increased risk of injury," said study lead author Audra Roemer, a graduate student with the University of Victoria in British Columbia. Besides falls, car accidents and such, the researchers looked at suicidal behavior and violence. Based on the study results, Roemer said injury risk – intentional or accidental – could be several times higher for the ... Read more

Can Coffee Perk Up Heart Health, Too?

Posted 16 Jan 2017 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Jan. 16, 2017 – The caffeine in your morning cup of joe may do more than jolt you awake – it may also help dampen the type of inflammation that's linked to heart disease risk factors, a new study suggests. Researchers found that an inflammatory mechanism was dialed up in certain older adults, but not others. When it was highly activated, people often had high blood pressure and stiff arteries. But in lab experiments, there was evidence that caffeine blocked this inflammatory process. No one, however, is saying that morning cup of coffee is a magic bullet against aging. Still, the findings might help explain why past studies have linked higher caffeine intake to a longer life, said lead researcher David Furman, of Stanford University School of Medicine. The human body has "probably hundreds of pathways" that contribute to chronic inflammation and various diseases, according to ... Read more
