FDA Gets Tough With Homeopathic Medicines

MONDAY, Dec. 18, 2017 – The U.S. government plans to crack down on unproven homeopathic remedies, particularly those that pose the greatest risk to patients. The Food and Drug Administration released proposed rules on Monday that would step up its enforcement of homeopathic products, which largely have been given a free ride by regulators until now. "In recent years, we've seen a large uptick in products labeled as homeopathic that are being marketed for a wide array of diseases and conditions, from the common cold to cancer," FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said during a news conference. "In many cases, people may be placing their trust and money in therapies that may bring little to no benefit in combating these serious ailments, or worse, may cause significant or even irreparable harm," he added. [Posted 11/25/2016] ISSUE: Raritan Pharmaceuticals, a contract manufacturer for Homeolab USA, is voluntarily recalling homeopathic products containing belladonna extract (see products below) due to the potential for variation in the content of belladonna extract in the products. The FDA has tested some products and recovered varying levels of belladonna extract content from what is declared on the label. BACKGROUND: Raritan Pharmaceuticals is a contract manufacturer of these products for Homeolab USA that supplies the belladonna blends to Raritan Pharmaceuticals. Common Class of Drugs May Be Linked to Pneumonia Risk

TUESDAY, March 3, 2015 – Drugs used to treat a wide range of health problems may be associated with an increased risk of pneumonia, a new study suggests. Anticholinergic medications include those used for conditions such as allergies (for example, Benadryl), overactive bladder (including Ditropan), depression (for example, doxepin) and insomnia (Sominex, etc.). "Our study is the first to address whether oral anticholinergic medications affect the risk of pneumonia in older people," senior author Dr. Sascha Dublin, an associate investigator at the Seattle-based Group Health Research Institute, said in an institute news release.
