Everything you read about fibromyalgia says the pain is not from inflamation. I don't undetstand why the prednisone helps my pain because they say it only helps if there is inflamation? I went to the Dr. Yesterday and asked her to let me try it to see if it would help like I thought it did when I was prescribed it before for a sinus infection. Only 2 doses and my pain is 90 percent gone thank God because I needed a break but I know I can't stay on it longterm. Does it mean maybe they have missed another diagnoses? I'm confused. Please help with answers?
I've found many people and sites that all say they have swelling from FM. Sometimes there are the symptoms of swelling without finding any visible swelling. It can be just about anywhere in your body, but hands and feet are 2 common places. I myself have swelling every day in my ankles and nightly in my hands. Occasionally it'll be all over my body. Particularly annoying is when it occurs in the bridge of my nose and my glasses make the skin they rest on hurt so much! I get big dents in the skin on the bridge of my nose. Sounds crazy but it does happen. I'm glad you've gotten relief from the prednisone, however temporary.
Soaking in Epsom salts is recommended to reduce swelling. I sometimes go to the beach and soak in the salt water. A great way to keep the pain down is to destress your life. I'm much better off now that I set less goals for myself and take life easier. I don't get done what I formerly used to, but far less pain is worth it to me.
What other meds have worked for your fibro? I too have had fibro for 25 yrs and am quite discouraged regarding successful medications. I have taken prednisone, not for the fibro, but for consistent sinus infections. It has helped for sinusitis and also calmed the fibro. Problem is, no actual studies have proven if prednisone helps fibro or if it just helps any kind of consistent disease. I believe that because fibro does not lead to death but only causes consistent pain, particularly in women, not a lot of research has been done on it. And our ever insightful government continues to limit the medications doctors can prescribe for those of us who have this dreadful condition. You must be aware of the ramifications of continued use of steroids, which includes prednisone, have on the body. Guess some of us don't really care as long as we get SOME relief from the consistent pain of fibro. Good luck to you in your battle..
I have been off and on prednisone for my Lupus, for body inflammation when I have a Lupus flare up.I also have brain tumors and prednisone has helped keep this inoperable one from some of the inflammation. Prednisone as you said shouldn't be used for long term issues as the side effects can be damaging over long term use.I got my Lupus which is an auto -immune disease with many symptoms. One of the main pain issues is inflammation of the organs, and body tissues. Im not a Dr. but If prednisone works for your pain then that's a good clue to whats going on with you and that the Dr's could be missing the real picture, tests need to be done.Even certain arthritis's can cause body aches and pains.I got mine at 17 yrs old and I'm 63 yrs old now. Please follow up and don't give up you know your body better than anyone else.Good Luck.
Hello I am sorry you are suffering with this as I have since 1993.The prednisone helps because it stops the immune response your body puts out to pain.Be Careful as I know know it will deteriorate your bones and weaken your immune system.I know to be out of the pain is a breath of life however my experience is it is temporary and not worth the adverse side effects later on..Hope this helps!God besd... Baby bones
Fibromyalgia pain can mimic other symptoms, and often goes hand in hand with other conditions. (IE, often if you have fibromyalgia you have something else as well..it can be difficult for doctors to pick apart the symptoms.)
Don't give up, and don't listen when they say they can't do anything for you. They may not KNOW what to do for you, but that is a clue to find someone who does.
I've never tried Savella... I need to ask my doctor about it. I also like the suggestion for deep tissue massage. You will probably hate it while it's going on, but you'll love it after.
I've also know someone who said that his fibromyalgia was helped when he started taking guafenisen (the main ingredient in Mucinex). It thins the mucous in the body, which I guess is an inflammatory response... maybe also why the prednisone works? Prednisone suppresses your immune system, and fibromyalgia is an auto-immune disorder, so maybe that's why it works?
Ask your doctor about guafenisen (you can buy it generically by itself OTC). Warning, it does smell atrocious.
Good luck to you!
My rheumatologist diagnosed my fibromyalgia. Could not and refused to take any drug that would make me gain weight since I have had a gastric sleeve and lost over 100 pounds. I take Nambutone 750 mg 2x per day... Tramadol 50 mg 3x a day..and today my neuro put me on Skelaxin 800 mg up to 4 per day as needed after giving me 10 trigger point shots in my neck and shoulders. He also said prednisone will break bones down and i have osteoporosis and a bad vit d deficiency. As I understand it, there is no cure for fibro, so get a second opinion, change rheumy's, and listen to your body... not all docs are correct, so don't be afraid to say no to something you are not comfortable with... it is your body.
