I am currently on prescribed Dexilant 60mg for chronic GERD and Hiatal Hernia. The co-pay on this is $250. As I am on a fixed income, this monthly about is more than I can afford. Can I substitute OTC Nexium (3 20 mg capsules daily) for my prescription medication? I have done the price comparison and it would be a considerable savings.
Dexilant and Nexium are both treatments for acid reflux however you cannot be sure that 1mg of Dexilant is equivalent to 1mg of Nexium. Therefore 60mg of Nexium might be too high or too little compared to 60mg of Dexilant. I would highly suggest you speak with your doctor or pharmacist to find the comparable dosage before changing anything around yourself.
