is there a substitute for lodrane 24d that actually works? i have tried several other brands that seem to do next to nothing for me. the only other thing i have ever had work for me were alka-seltzer fast-melts... an orange flavored melt in the mouth tablet that i have not been able to find for years and the reason i finally had lodrane 24d prescribed for me. it was a miserable spring for me and i'm not happy that the fall alergy season is almost here for me. re-location is not an option for me and my family... i am just looking for something to that will help me breath easier when i need it and to not sound like a gurgling coffee pot when i breath... no i dont smoke either. would also be nice to be able to sleep again.
No, and trust me, I have tried everything. HOWEVER, if you go to any pharmacy, you can ask them to order Lodrane OTC for you.
3 cons, but it's better than nothing IMO:
1. FREAKING expensive - every time I order it, the pharmacy person looks at me, looks at the price, then asks someone senior to them, or outright saying "this can't be the right price, can it?" Yep, it is.
2. Only 4 hour formulation
3. Does not seem to be as effective as Lodrane (probably because you could take 2 at a time, if needed, and I doubt they have that possibility of doubling down, with this formulation)
Alternative, if you don't mind taking cough medicine with it: BROMFED is liquid version, and much cheaper since it's a generic (contains the same active ingredient as Lodrane). Still only gives you 4 hours at a time though, and is nasty tasting. Interestingly, seems to work a lot better than the actual LODRANE 4 hour tabs though (maybe higher dose, not sure).
Until I found out about that, the only thing that halfway worked (and I mean barely halfway), was Chlor Trimeton 12 hour. I have literally tried every single allergy med on the market, and some off, both Rx and OTC, and Drixoral, then Lodrane, have really been the only thing that help my symptoms.
I also barely recommend (if desperate), Astepro nasal spray, just because it works very well, but some nasty side effects, including drying your nose out.
