Hi i have been taking suboxone for about two years now i'm down to only 1mg a day i cut it in half and take .5mg in the morning and the other .5mg at night its working great!! ..now for the bad news i have to have knee surgery and i was wondering how this is going to work im going to have to take something for the pain how will i be able to do this... how long will i need to stop taking the sub before i take the pain meds... can anyone help with an answer
Dear Kribob, There has been alot of debate about that here with people swearing that a high enough dose of opiate would overide subs. As u know, subutex does NOT CONTAIN the 2nd blocker med naloxone. And u are on a low dose of subs. If I were u, i would call my subs dr and have him call Reckitt-Benckiser and ask<if he doesn't know> what to do. My counselor and anyone else who relapsed swore subs blocked opiates, but that was for people taking 16mgs, and subs will last 3 to 5 days in the brain at 8mgs. My counselor hinted there was a plan for those who had to have surgery on subs for pain, but she refused to hint at what it was. My logical suspicion is that it involves a switch to subutex and stopping a few days b4 surgery, but i don't know that. U are on a low dose and as i tapered down and off, i could definitely tell subs at 1mg was wearing off at about the 37 hour mark. U do know u MUST let the surgeon and anesthestisiologist know u are on suboxone for your safety. good luck Pattishan
Sorry I just found this question so Im not sure if you already had the surgury or not. If you did, then let us know how it all went down. If not, Ill say in my experience Ive been able to get pain meds to work a little bit while on Subs. Its nowhere near the normal effect but it did help some. I have major chronic back pain which caused me to get hooked on pain meds, then get on Suboxone, then at times the pain got too bad while taking Subs so I needed to take something and I was able to take high doses of Oxy while taking Subs and it still worked a little. It helped take the edge off which is what I really needed. The time it worked best for me is when I injured my back pretty bad at work and then it was messed up more than normal for a few days so I took some Oxy that day and then the next 2 days I didnt take Subs, only Oxy and those 2 days it worked a lot better. But then as the pain went down some, I started taking Subs again the next day and because I already still had them in my system I didnt have any precipitated withdrawals. Its a risky situation because of the chance of precip WDs which is total hell but I needed to do it and it sounds like you might need to do it too.
Good luck to you however you try to do it. I just thought Id tell you my experience on that whole situation. If you want to be less risky, you can just stop taking the Subs for like 3 days and then take your pain meds for just the amount of time you really need it and then wait another whole day with taking nothing at all except NSAIDs (ibuprofin, tylenol, etc) and then get back on your same dose of Subs the next day. This way is less risky but is more difficult to do because of having to wait days in between switching back and forth.
Like I said, let us know what you end up doing and how it worked for you since many ppl have been and will be in this same situation.
