They are basicly one in the same one is long last and one is short term. So for chronic pain you may want to try OxyContin. But, there are other chronic pain meds that my work better that are not in the narcotic family. Please try and fail a couple before going straight for narcotics.

What you're going to have to do is see a pain dr, and do not ask for a specific med. They know what to use and if you ask it makes you look like a drug seeker and you won't get anything.
