I have come down with what we believe is my third strep throat in a row. The Dr never took a throat culture the first two times (not standard here in UK) but used a criteria based approach to diagnose step throat. The first time I was prescribed erythromycin as normal penicillin has never worked on me in the past and the second time I was given clarithromycin. Now I have got it back again (6 days after I finished my antibiotic, exact same time it took between 1st and 2nd time it came back too). This time they have swabbed me and I am waiting for them to confirm it is step throat. I have been left without antibiotic in the mean time. Which antibiotic do you think I should be prescribed if it is confirmed I have come down with it a third time and for how long? I want to get rid of it once and for all now! I don't trust my Dr to know as took so long to even get tested even though I asked for it as soon as it came back. Penicillin has never worked on me to treat strep throat but erythromycin did a few years back so why we initially tried that. I should add that I took 250 mg of erythromycin 6 times a day for 10 days and 500mg of clarithromycin 2 times a day for 7 days. The symptoms disappeared after a few days on each of them (slightly quicker when on erythromycin) but I made sure to finish the full course and it still came back each time 6 days later! I am even considering just taking some home remedies in the hope that it won't come back a fourth time if I let my body deal with it on its on. What are your suggestions for getting rid of it once and for all?
