my daughter dropped kitchen appliance on her finger saturday. her finger is swollen and in pain.
If something like this ever happens again, be sure to use ice in the first 48 hours. Ice will greatly reduce inflammation and swelling when used right away. Even if it is broken, there is not much more they can do for it other than immobilize it like kaismama mentioned. Is she old enough to be able to use some Advil? If she is 12 or older, a couple Advil might help with the pain. If she is under 12, use Childrens Motrin or Advil and follow the package directions for her age/weight. You can get a finger splint at the pharmacy or you can use a popsicle stick or tongue depressor and use cloth medical tape to secure it to her finger. Dont keep a splint on too long or the finger can stiffen up. She should take it off and try to bend her finger some as much as possible. This is so painful. My son dropped a pallet of wood on his toe about two weeks ago and his big toenail was black and just throbbed and throbbed for days. he just lost the nail finally about 2 days ago.
(talk about gross! That was nasty! I havent seen anything that gross since I was a nurse in a wound healing center! lol) If her finger nail is black, she may lose the nail but no worries, they usually grow back fine as long as the bed wasnt damaged and once the blood releases from under the nail it wont be painful, if this is the cause of the pain. These kinds of injuries are very painful but they usually heal fairly rapidly. You begin to realize how often you use your hands!
