I have chronic pain in my shoulders and upper arms. My doctor suggested steroid shots but I am skeptical. I would like to know if steroid shots and effective and if there are any side effects. Thanks
Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. Usually the doctor will only do a certain number of them so to avoid the potential for any side effects. I have had several over the past 10 years and they worked for awhile. Each of us have different conditions, so it is hard to say whether your will respond favorably or not. Worth a try in my book.
Hi, I have had the steroid injections in my shoulder and at first I was worried about having them, but it was such a relief when I had the injection and the shoulder became more comfortable. I say try it because everyone is different and if there is a chance of pain relief, it is worth a try to see if your one of the lucky ones that it will work for you. Good luck, liz.
I would say it depends on what is wrong with your shoulder. For bursitis , cortisone shots are miraclous, but if it is a torn rotator cuff, you may need surgery as the shot may help for a short time, but then wears off & back comes the pain. Uppper arm pain also sounds like rotator cuff problems... Mary
What caused your pain? Did you injury yourself playing a sport? My experience has been an injection that is a combination of cortisone and steroids. Typically it only takes a few shots to resolve the problem. If you sustained a sports injury I would see a sports medicine doctor as they deal with these issues more often than orthopedic doctors. Good luck.
They only worked temporarily. I had 4 of them in my shoulder. Since 10 to 14 years later, I have more pain in that arm than I have in stroke arm which is not good. And I greatly wanted one in my stroke arm months after my stroke when my arm hurt more than anything I could have imagined. They said no based on my history of having those 4 injections. I would limit them if anyone decides to get them.
