I have Opiate Bowel Syndrome and I've been on Relistor for quite a while. It has been less and less effective. What is the next step for OBS?
I don't know exactly for you. I have had issues of it working for me after the third every other day dosage. I called my doctor who I was seeing for surgery, who called the Relistor folks, who wouldn't answer my questions. They told him I could take it daily. I tried again the next day in addition to 3-4 Miralax dosages and 2-3 colace. It still didn't work. As I got more full , sick feeling, bloated, I decided to add in what my GI had me on at home, Osmoprep . I took 32 within ten hours with a lot of water. Then I took another shot of Relistor. It worked.
However since returning home to FL after surgery, I am still having problems. I saw my GI on Tuesday. He put me on Relistor daily. By day three I have been in severe stomach pain and today's dosage didn't help. He also prescribed me Amitaza(sp). I am to try this after a week try of Relistor. But if the pain stays this strong, I will try the Amitaza sooner. He told me since I had a colonoscopy and I have no obstructions about 7 years ago, I can take Miralax as I need it, Osmoprep, a prescription Medicine, clean out for colonoscopy. I used that daily at 5-7 twice daily until my stomach started bothering me. I was very excited about the Relistor, but it isn't helping well consistently. I also am bothered that Relistor hasn't been tested for more than 4 months of usage and is meant for palliative care of those living for less than six months, but the doctors are all acting as if this is approved for all opioid induced constipation and I can't find that anywhere.
I'd check with your doctor since we may be very different, but my doc basically has given me three prescription meds and I can add OTC as I need. I do have to say that I often do okay for 8 days until the medicines start causing a lot of bloating and make me feel 'crappy'. Good Luck. We all need it
