Is this safe?
Yes and no. Yes keep taking it, you have no choice really. Rhuemy's dont like narcotic pain relief. The long term side effects for ibuprofen is the big question. I am in the same boat, but I cannot function without it, I have tried. I take Advil gel caps, it is the only thing that helps.
Since it can take up to six to eight weeks for methotrexate to start to have an effect on your arthritis, you must continue with pain medications. What you may find once the methotrexate starts to work is that you don't go looking to take your ibuprofen right on time.
I hope you have a follow-up appointment with your rheumatologist shortly, and that you find some relief!
