I am 16 and I suffer from generalized anxiety disorder and my doctor gave me Lexapro 5MG one everyday. My doctor only gave me 5MG is it because I am still young? I was wondering how long would it take for it to work? I took one today and my current side effects are heartburn, racing thoughts, and irritability. Will these side effects go away and how long? (I just started today)
Hi, Coutinho! Welcome to the Drugs.com community.
All the side effects you are experiencing are *normal* for a few people when they start any antidepressant and for most people they only last for a few days to a week or two getting better every day.
Your doctor likely started you on a low dose to avoid serious side effects and to be sure you tolerate the drug well. Later, if needs be, he may elect to raise your dose to the full 10mg daily maintenance dose or even higher.
Some people feel the effects even sooner but generally it takes about a month and then another month to reach therapeutic blood levels.
I hope Lexapro works as well for you as it has for me! If you have any questions or concerns along the way feel free to post here anytime, okay?
Best wishes, Wildcat
