I will be taking 1 tab of Harvoni daily and 600mg. Ribivirin 2 times a day. I am not to worried about the Harvoni but I am about the Ribivirin. There seems to be alot of side effects for this particular drug. Anyone else out there that is on this combination? Thank you.
I haven't used Harvoni (Australian PBS does not pay for it yet. The health people want to cover Harvoni but is too expensive, even if you are spending $3.4 billion. Currently treatment is available but the budget is stuck at $55,000 per course I believe).
I have used Ribavirin and it was horrible. I described it as my most horrible experience that was paid for and voluntary. By contrast I have heard excellent stories from people on Harvoni (only). Headaches being the biggest complaint.
Yup! I started 8 days ago! Tbh I'm a bit tired but nothing to serious! The only strange thing is the right side of my scalp hurts to touch! Like I was hit with a bat! The first few night I could not sleep but that could just be my nervs about the treatment! All keep you up to date I'm in week two! I get my count back and I'm very optimistic!
You are the second person I have heard of on that combination. It seems to be for people who have been non responders previously or have cirrhosis and they really want to knock it on the head. I presume you are also on a 24 week course?
You are Ribavirin naive I just noticed; well, there is no other way of saying this: Ribavirin was a gift from the Devil.
PS when I was talking about money above; that was $AU $55,000 per course, whereas Harvoni would cost around $AU 170,000.
I would get a second opinion about taking anything along with harvoni unless there are extenuating circumstances. Harvoni is a cure and I would strongly question the addition of another med. I took interferon with no results for a full year with weekly visits to the oncologist I am sure my insurance company hemorrhaged money that year. Then I found out that the normal course of treatment then was Rebotron a combination therapy of Interferon and Ribivirin which the pharmaceutical company sent to my pharmacy for free each month. To say that it was two years of hell is an understatement. I have to wonder why my doctor chose to do that although I'm fairly certain that it has something to do with the almighty dollar. I wish you the best.
I had a course of interferon with ribavirin, load count became undetectable but I relapsed after a month.
I now have started (week 2) on Harmoni with ribavirin. The Royal Free hospital in London, a highly respected world class teaching university hospital, always uses ribavirin alongside Harvoni as I'm told it gives the Harvoni, which is highly successful in it's own right, a 10% better chance of success. The dose of ribavirin in my case was initially 600mg 2x daily but soon reduced to 400mg twice daily due to ribavirin's destructive effect on hemoglobin levels (mine were borderline to start). The low hemoglobin is basically what causes tiredness side effects. Lots of fluid intake may help with headaches. Be extremely careful of buying drugs over the counter for fighting any side effects, they will mess with the harvoni and as this stuff isn't cheap best use it wisely.
I hope my over a years worth of suffering HCV treatments experience helps someone just a little bit. Best wishes.
