I suffer from IBS and have been prescribed Lomotil and Donnatal elixir to treat my symptoms for about 10 years. Unfortunately when I lost my health insurance I had to stop taking it. It's been about 5 years since I have taken it. I was just prescribed a bottle of Lomotil and Donnatal (the Lomotil is 2.5 mg). I do not remember how many mg I have been prescribed in the past. These seem to do the trick (definitely an improvement from Imodium!) but sometimes it seems like it doesn't knock it out as fast as what I was given years ago. Can someone please let me know what the standard dosage is for Lomotil? Is 2.5 mg the maximum dosage amount for this medication?
The standard dose is two tablets four times a day until symptoms subside. To maintain control you can then adjust the dose to as little as two tablets once a day. The liquid dose would be two teaspoons four times a days and two teaspoons once a day for maintenance.
I've had IBS since I was a teenager (quite a few years ago!!). I'm on a daily medicine called bentyl, or rather the generic which is dicyclomine. It's pretty inexpensive. This medicine has made all the difference in the world for me. It actually allows me to lead a normal life as opposed to just being the woman who knows where every bathroom in the state is located! I've taken it for over 20 years. It is a prescription med so you might want to ask your Dr about it the next time you see him. I hope this answers your question.
Lomotil tabs only come in one strength, 2.5 mg
