... I am 55 and am worried that it will get worse. What are some things I can do to help myself?
Hi Sunshinee, My living with a Grade 5 Spondylolisthesis is worthy of a PH D in RESEARCH for myself, read EVERYTHING ever published on the internet ... some of it is SCARY... so ONLY take what sounds right for YOU. Everyone you talk to or make an appointment with will have recommendations. Depending on the severity ( how far your spine has slipped ) and what caused it is also important to know from your MRI. There are physical therapists, chiropractors, pain management clinics, accupuncturists, surgeons ... I GOT alot of info before made any decisions. My case is in-operable so I opted to try a 3 day implant of a Spinal Cord Stimulator by St. Judes Medical - it has literally CHANGED my life at 55 yrs old. I now have 2 implants that I would NEVER give up. I do still require some pain meds and muscle relaxers, antidepressant because when you LOOSE so much of what is taken for granted, and have to give up alot of things you used to OR would like to do. I admit they help me and I have no reservations about taking them ( or ANYTHING that improves my quality of life ) Opinions abound, just remember it is YOUR body, your responsibility to choose your plan of treatment in the crowded pool of options. I always get more than one opinion, rely on blogs like this, and have faith in God that I am guided to good decisions. There are terrible stories out here ... mine could be TOLD in a horrible way ( because at many times IT WAS ! ) And that brings US to my last bit of advice ... accept your reality and make the best of it. As soon as I see someone WORSE off than me, my self pity is gone, and my resolve to keep going, keep up to date and research everything. It makes for great homework on the inevitable sleepless nights in pain ... after you exert yourself at work or doing things that NEED to get done. I know after I am ACTIVE beyond my 'limits' I will pay dearly that nite and perhaps a few days. Knowing your body in a way most people do not have to can be frustrating, and at times angering. That's when I take out my computer in respond to someone like you just beginning this journey. I will answer any questions from anyone that I might be able to help... It helps ME in return. GOOD LUCK and God Bless, Marilyn
