Aloha, I have scoliosis and just had the above surgery 17 days ago. I sure could use some support from others who have gone through this uber major surgery.
Don’t know how helpful I can be, but I had the first part of my scoliosis repair on 11/27/17 (from L1 to L4) then the second stage on 11/30/17. I was told to excpect a 100% chance of complications. I’ve had none. My spine was not curved at all until I had a neuro stimulator implant a pain mgt. doctor pushed me to have. My spine curved from the implant site (T4) to T8. My entire lumbar spine curved all the way to my right hip. I couldn’t eat well, had many falls resulting in broken bones and concussion. My life depended on having the corrections. I was extremely afraid of the idea of the painful recovery process. I should still be in the hospital but I did amazingly well. Of course, I really cannot be alone for long periods because I cannot bend, twist or lift. I’m also experiencing severe cramping of my hands and legs. I decided to try OTC magnesium supplements and it helps. I have a caregiver who is with me all night but she is really on my back because I cannot sleep with my body straight or my head up.
I can say this- it’s a very humbling experience. I’m extremely independent and I cannot even clean my body without assistance.
I do have tremendous faith in God and I believe that I have just been given the chance to live a good life again.
It is frustrating. Painful and very lonely. No one can comprehend the magnitude of the recovery process unless one has experienced it. I wish I had something to tell you that would help get you through.
NEVER GIVE UP. NEVER LET ANYONE TELL YOU THAT YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BE BETTER THAN YOU WERE. YOU ARE!
