Wed night when things got rough he took klonapin and that seem to help him last night he started having a hard time and took klonapin. I'm trying to make sure he is prolonging the withdrawl from using.
I'm really not sure what you're asking here. If your son is addicted to Heroin and he quit Cold Turkey as of Tuesday, then he should be in strong withdrawal symptoms (wds) today. He will continue to be that way for at least 6 more days. If he was only taking Heroin the worst of it usually lasts about 10 days. However, if he has also been using Methadone or Suboxone the wds can last much, much longer. A lot of addicts think Methadone and Suboxone are quick ways to fix themselves but this isn't true. Both drugs will stop the agony they're in, but both then require a much longer time to get free from them. Nevertheless, for many people those drugs are the only way to get the opiate addiction under control.
I think with your son, that the length of time he's been addicted to Heroin may also play a part in how long the wds last. You should also know that while Klonopin can help to ease the wds a little, Klonopin itself is addictive. It takes a long time to get hooked on it, but if he takes it daily for 30 days he may then not be able to stop taking it.
If he is serious about doing a detox there are several non addictive drugs a Doc can give him to help. These are Clonidine, Baclofen, Trazodone and Zofran. Trazodone is mostly for the mental wds, where as the other 3 are more for the physical wds. Baclofen works wonders to stop the shakes. He will also need Imodium for diarrhea, which he will get as his bowels loosen up. He should also take a good Vitamin B + C pill.
I wish him luck.
