He did not go see the doctor, but everyone says that Amoxiclllin is the right answer. I searched up information online, and he took 1 pill. He felt better after. Should he continue taking it?How much should he take? He is a 14 year old boy. What should I do? Maybe he has strep throat.

You need to seek the advise of a doctor. There are strict protocols concerning antibiotics. That is why we have drug resistant antibiotic strains of bacteria. If you give him 5 at what ever mlg. for how ever many days, and how ever many you give per day, you are playing with fire. If you think he has strep, he needs to get put on the appropriate antibiotic, by a physician. Non of us on this site can appropriately diagnose over the internet. Take him to your family doctor in the morning.
Excellent answers, Elmo and Stephen.
My response last night didn't go through but I was making the same point.
We are not doctors but even your doctor wouldn't be able to say for sure until he sees the culture report !
A culture not only determines the organism but what specific antibiotic is responsive to that specific organism.
Antibiotics and infections are very tricky.
They are different than other types of pills.
The fact that he got better so quickly after one pill indicates it's his own body healing itself. Antibiotics has to start to kill the infection before he has any relief in symptoms. It usually takes a few days, broadly speaking, for a sore throat.
The fact that you gave him another dose shows you don't totally understand the dangers...
You want his body to respond to antibiotics when he truly needs them. Right ?
We are talking about a long life of being able to receive the max benefit from his medications.
I know kids can be in severe pain when they get sore throats.
The best approach in these situations is to take Tylenol and gargle for a few days. If no sign of improvement, get them into a doctor especially if there is a fever.
However, it is better to go to an Urgent Care or ER rather than start antibiotics on your own.
The culture results may not be as accurate now.
What happens if he doesn't respond to antibiotics and his sore throat continues?
The doctor's hands are tied because he/she didn't have an accurate culture to begin with.
Why do you have antibiotics at home?
You must not have followed directions previously when told to take the entire course even if you are feeling totally better !
No one should have antibiotics at home if not in use.
Please take him to the doc today and don't contribute to "super-bugs" being created due to indiscriminate use of antibiotics.
I'm sorry if I sound harsh but it's important for the good of his health.
Go today so culture will be available and resolved by Monday.
I hope he gets well soon.
You need to go see a doctor. There's no telling whether the throat issue is because of a bacterial or fungal infection which is the only indication for Amoxicillin and other antibiotics. The fact that he felt better an hour later is even more telling because Amoxicillin must accumulate to become effective. It takes days to notice an improvement, not hours. Go to the hospital and have them swab his throat for a culture.
