Dear Pappy, is your son wanting to quit opiates? If he doesn't, there is little you can do. If he does want to quit, may i suggest suboxone. Suboxone is a long acting opiate replacement and properly used( which means doing the required addiction therapy) is one of the lifesaving tools in the recovery toolbox. Not just any dr can prescribe it, only those who have taken the training course have the special DEA rx number to write for it. Suboxone has a webpage, suboxone.com, there is a toll free number and a here to help link with a dr locator service. If your son needs any surgery, even dental, get that done before starting suboxone, as subs blocks opiates, it stops withdrawal and craving too. He will have to go into withdrawal for 24 hours before starting it. When you go to suboxone.com, and find the dr locator link, open the search parameters up to 100 miles of his home, save the drs names and numbers. There is a fee, called the induction fee, and it varies from dr to dr, but is usually between $250 and $400, and the drs usually won't file insurance to treat a subs patient. Subs keeps a person functional while they work on recovery, but does NOT get them high or allow them to get high on opiates while using it. He will need the addiction therapy, skipping that is a dangerous short cut and almost assures relapse. It is NOT simply replacing one med with another, if he does the therapy and learns when to taper off of it. You could join AL ANON, that is for the families and loved ones of alcoholics and addicts, a it is an almost free support group for families and loved ones, you will need that.at AL ANON, they might ask for a small donation at meetings of $1 to help cover cost of coffee, rent, but if you don't have it, no one will make you feel bad. They also might ask you to buy a copy of the big book, but you can probabaly find one at the library if you can't afford it. It used to be $5 i don't know how much it is, but you don't have to buy it. Other than that, there are no other charges to go to AL ANON. It will help you understand what is going on with your son. Best of luck, patti
