Is solvadi drug safe for patients who were put in remission from Head and neck cancer... I'm 36 years old,I was diagnosed with hypopharyngeal carcinoma one year ago and my labs were negative for hepatitis c virus. I finished my treatment (chemotherapy 'cisplatin-taxotare-5 FU' /Radio 32 sessions) 9 months ago. 3 months after i had finished the treatment , my labs became positive for hepatitis c virus .Iwant to know Is it suitable for me to treat with sovaldi?
I would be inclined to say possibly (this really is a question for a liver specialist or gastroenterologist) as the FDA monograph says ( https://www.drugs.com/pro/sovaldi.html ) that it is safe to use in people who currently have small cell liver cancer, awaiting transplant within the next 48 weeks. It does not, however, give answers exclusively about Sovaldi and cancer but makes a point that as it is paired with Ribavirin; that needs to be considered also. Read about Ribavirin here: https://www.drugs.com/mtm/ribavirin.html and also read all known drug interactions with Sovaldi: https://www.drugs.com/drug-interactions/sofosbuvir,sovaldi-index.html
It also notes that Sovaldi is the subject of ongoing cancer studies that are being conducted on rats and mice (the transgenic 'cancer mice' had normal life spans (for them)) on a dosage 8 times the human dose/Kg, Rats tolerated 9 times as much. It did not induce cancer even in the cancer mice
The problem seems to be when Ribavirin is added to the mix it becomes toxic and I would say definitely no. You are thinking of an interferon/ribavirin/sovaldi cocktail I presume? I hope your insurance is good as Sovaldi is insanely expensive.
