That is not medically supported by the evidence of study and blind-tested results. Anecdotes would seem to support some combination of poor diet, inattention to personal hygiene and general decline in health caused by lifestyle rather than specific drug-progressed dental problems. This is almost a chicken and egg question. Did the patient have pre-existing oral health problems exacerbated by drug use or did drug use cause the exaggerated progress of dental caries? My belief is there is some evidence the long-term use of methadone and buprenorphine causes a dental decline, but I cannot answer how much personal neglect contributed to this problem. The obvious is showing in the smiles of a majority of patients at any drug-treatment clinic, regardless of root cause.
