I take Ambien for insomnia and Xanax for anxiety during the day. I am also on Lithium and Wellbutrin for Bipolar II. My GP had prescribed the Xanax. Psychiatrist says no more Xanax, says you can not take it and Ambien together. Obviously I don't take them TOGETHER, but he won't listen. It was going just fine until Dr. Shrink found I had both drugs. I need something to manage the anxiety attacks I get at work 2-3 times a week. Was wondering if I could use the Ambien in place of the Xanax?
Can I use a small dose of Ambien (1/3 of a 5 mg tablet) in place of Xanax, for anxiety attacks?

I guess I am going to have to find another psychiatrist. My current one believes that the only thing to do about the anxiety attacks is to increase the dosage of Lithium or Wellbutrin. No room for negotiation on the Xanax. I don't want to take any more Lithium because it gives me hand tremors, which is embarrassing. And I don't want to take more Wellbutrin because when we increased to 150 mg. I had a manic episode. So I suppose I have answered my own question.
Unless your panic attacks are actually caused by seizures, I don't think it would be a good idea to use the ambien to treat your panic disorder. Perhaps your Psychiatrist or GP should suggest an alternative.
Take care for now and all the best.
Hi Bantamhen, Ambien is not designed for anxiety and I wouldn't take these 2 drugs together... not a good idea! Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about this!
In a pinch I do believe you would be fine but Xanax is designed to act very quickly and wear off very quickly allowing you to function in life and is only taken when necessary. Ambien is long acting for sleeping aid. So if you are out functioning driving working etc you may be impaired and putting yourself in grave danger.
There are other mds you can try for insomnia. Estazolam works well for me.
Ambien during the day can be dangerous.
When the doctor says you can’t take Ambien & Xanax together, he isn’t referring to the time of day. He means you can’t take Xanax while you are being treated with Ambien.
