... deprivation ? For sleep deprivation. Have had multitudes of antidepressants, anxiolytics, and an antipsychotic. Do not have sleep apnea had the studies. Anyone ?
I have bipolar disorder and a pretty extreme anxiety disorder. I have taken every prescription sleep aid and none of them helped. I have never been prescribed a barbiturate as a sleep aid, nor has it ever been suggested. The main thing that kept me from sleeping was that my brain would never shut down. I take clonazepam before bed (a benzodiazepine), which helps alleviate my anxiety and "calms" my brain. However, I also have bruxism (clenching of jaw/grinding of teeth) which I cannot control while I'm asleep, so in addition to wearing a custom bite guard I also take a muscle relaxer before bed (currently tizanidine). I'm not sure if/how much this may aid my ability to sleep.
When my anxiety wasn't so bad, melatonin actually helped me sleep (the only OTC or prescription that helped at that time). I suggest you discuss the correct dosage with a doctor if you decide to try it - I found that the dosage recommendations on the melatonin containers were drastically different than what my doctor suggested, and what she suggested actually worked.
Above all else, I think the most important thing to do before you decide which sleep aid to try is to find out WHY you aren't sleeping. The reasons vary, and the solutions will vary depending upon those reasons.
Hope this helped, and I wish you the best of luck - I know how awful sleep deprivation can be and how much it interferes with every aspect of your life.
You seem to be suffering from significant anxiety. I've worked in the field a long time. The big Pharm (pharmaceutical company's) make their fortunes on us. Most physicians are incompetent as are most therapists. Its not you honey... its them. Please... please find a highly qualified gestalt therapist. I know you know me from boo... but please, I understand psychic pain and western society is valuable... only for broken bones and heart attacks. Positive thoughts for you.
