I've been having sickle cell since I was born.. now that I've been diagnosed with an RA called Sjogren and I've been in a great deal of pain.. sometimes I can't get out of bed. My Dr. want me to take Humira and I'm not sure if I should
I would suggest reading Humira patient reviews using a google search engine. Take a look what people your age have to say. Personally, I took it three times. I developed a cough that turned into a lung infection and wound up in bed for five weeks on mega doses of antibiotics and pain meds. The pain was excruciating. When a drug turns off your already compromised immune system the consequences are insurmountable. I am totally against biologics after my brief experience.
My father was put on it for the Sjogrens and RA. He's in his early 60's and wound up severely ill and in the hospital for 2 months about 4 years ago. He ended up on a breathing tube and his kidneys started shutting down. It was a scary situation and was touch and go for a long while. Luckily he was able to recover, but he's had memory, balance issues, and tires more easily since the whole situation. When he first ended up in the ER none of the doctors knew what the Humira was. They kept asking if he was on anything that could compromise his immune system, and I kept repeating that he was on that medication. He chose to discontinue the medication immediately after this health scare. When your immune system is already compromised, I just don't think these kind of medications are a good idea. Research all you can, get feedback from others who have been on Humira, and then you can make a more informed decision. You're right to proceed with caution.
